I am cosidering buying a mulching mower, possibly (but not necessarily) a Stiga Villa. How small are the cuttings that are left? Do people who walk/play on the grass straight after mowing collect clippings on their shoes, are unsightly clippings visible? I don't usually allow the grass to grow particularly long and generally mow weekly. Any advice or comments welcome.

I got a mulcher last year to replace an old cutter/collecter. Very happy with it. Much quicker and absolutely no problem if you don't let the grass get too long.

'Mulching mower' just means 'no grassbox'.

One school of thought says it recycles the nutrients; however it can also lead to thatch build-up and moss. That is certainly the case with my Flymo, but then it doesn't hover with the grassbox on and I'm not that fussy.

Mulching mower does not mean mower with no grass box !!

We have a simplicity mulching mower, it cuts with two blades rather than one and at twice the speed, so long as you cut it once a week you won't see any cuttings as they are so small you will never see them.

Even if we cut and then walk / play on the grass our shoes / animals don't pick up and bits.

Had ours for 3 years and its one of the best things we ever bought, not only does the grass grow better as its feed with neutiants but these is no emptying of grass boxes every 5 mins

Having killed my 'cheap' petrol mower last night (lasted 11 years, but the body/chassis finally gave up on me last night) first thing I did for the replacement was to log on to PH to ask about mulching mowers, and glad I checked the posts before starting my own thread wink

So, I have a relatively small garden, mostly flat (a couple of small slopes). I try to mow once a week, but it's not always possible (rain, or like the last 18 days, away on holiday) and my grass seems to grow really fast, so would a mulching mower be effective? (some patches of grass last night were probably 8" tall). A typical mowing session has me emptying the grass box about 4 times, so not a real chore. Budget isn't huge (up to about £250, £300 at a push) so I would be looking at an 'ok' rotary or a low end mulcher (and these don't seem to come with grass boxes to give me the option).

Finally, if I stay with a normal rotary, considering the garden size, and the fact that it's odd shaped in places so I don't get many straight runs, should I try and forget about a rear roller rotary? (have kids and a dog so a smart lawn gets chewed up pretty quickly)

PH thoughts appreciated smile

It does if you read Flymo's advertising!
