I bought an office desk from Staples last year, it seemed to be quite decent quality for the money and I have been pretty pleased with it apart from the assembly which was a bit of a nightmare (as you would expect).

Today, the edging has come away just where my arm rests to use the mouse making it very uncomfortable and also pretty useless.

Given how much hassle it was to transport, then assemble I feel like I am potentially the loser in this situation.

What should I do?... Try and dismantle the whole thing and transport it back to Staples? a few hours work at best, then I would have the same prospect with another replacement I guess? Also I had to glue quite a few sections (as per instructions) so I am not sure it will fit in my car any longer?

Any advice on my consumer rights and what I should do would be welcomed as I have about 5 weeks before the receipt goes over 12 months.

I am quite annoyed as I have now gone from self-employed to full-time employed so the few hours I get to myself each week should not be spent rectifying this sort of thing.

TIA

+1 with the glue, if I'm reading right that it were fairly cheap, I'd only bother with the hoo-ha of complaining on more expensive stuff.

use some superglue or araldite or something similarly serious given it's a high-wear spot. Let it dry fully before plonking your wrist on itsmile

Well, I say fairly cheap. I was over a £100 so not that cheap.

It is a bit annoying, I have taped it up for the moment to prevent it getting worse.

It does look like it has been badly made/designed, so it is only going to get worse. I will speak to them next week and see what they say!

I'd use impact adhesive (eg Evo-Stik). Smear thinly each side, wait until tacky then press firmly.

Congratulate yourself for not buying from Ikea, thereby prolonging your desks useful life by about 11 months, and then get the glue out.

Can you turn the desk or desk top around so the edge is on the back side?

That laminate strip stuff comes on a roll you can iron it on.

Quick fix : a desk pad that extends over the edge like this - http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/3012996...

And fwiw, I've had a few ikea desks over the years and they've been great.

The problem you have is that you are pulling at the veneer on the 90deg corner where the two face meet. Fix it as above (impact adhesive), and then use a sanding block and fine(ish) paper at 45deg to take the edge off so you don't catch it. Go gently though so you don't go through the veneer more than necessary.

Next time you look for a desk, go for one with a rounded front edge.

Colour?
You could go solid wood, some cedar T&G to make a new top costs peanuts from a timber yard smile
(some assembly required).
