Central Heating Air Emitter.

Mine sprang a leak.

It has been cut off and an in-line valve put in its place (temporay fix).

Do I really need an air emitter?

Yes it is the auto bleed vent that I called the air emitter i.e. same thing (I think).

Alright, alright, just clarifying.

Auto bleed vents quite often let by if left open. After the system is filled and the air expelled, they should be shut.

It doesn't have to be an automatic vent. It could be a thumb vent if you so wish. It could be a valve that you crack open, although mimimal water can come out of a thumb vent so it'd be prefered over an isolating valve.

Auto Air Vents are hideous things. They leak loads, allow air INTO systems if placed poorly AND often mask faults in a system by temporarily relieving symptoms such as hydrogen production.
