Couldnt see a forum for this but if there is one mods please move.

Right, my old washing machine is making impressive grinding noises and I am sure its not worth repairing. So I have promised her indoors a new one. Looking at something that has a big drum 10-11kg and high spin speed

I have homed in on a Hotpoint AQ113D697E but cant find any reviews online. Anybody have one or other variety of Hotpoint washer and care to share their experience ?

Being a PH're I want the fastest shiniest beast I can get - but it needs to be quiet (wont be doing tunnel runs so this is ok)

Yes I know its not very PH but if I Have to spend my hard earned on a washer I dont want to waste it

What is your budget? (before you get the standard answer of Miele)

Well I dont want to break the bank, somewhere around £600 would be ideal. I can pick up that hotpoint for £518 in delivery.

Bosch and Siemens dont make machines with the high capacity, I dont think Miele do either which is good as it will save me some money.

To be honest, this is tucked away in a utility room so I dont care what it looks like and my current machine was a cheapo that cost £150 and lasted 7 years so I dont see much point in buying an expensive brand name.

£600?

You could buy 2 decent ones for that!

(Ours is the quietest I've ever owned and cost £279)

Even cheaper now

Not with a 10 or 11 kg drum and 1600 spin speed, current machine is normal size and is a pain. I just want to be able to shove a big pile of clothes in !

After reading a few bits on the 'washerhelp.co.uk' forums (Yes, such a site exists!) I bought a Zanussi with a large capacity, and a few bells and whistles (but not a range-topping model) for under £300 from Pixmania.

That was nearly two years ago, and it has been absolutely hammered from day one.

It has yet to miss a beat (Fingers crossed)

When at home, I will dig out the model number.

I understand the need for high load, but don't get too hung up on spin speed. There is a huge difference between theamount of water extracted as you move from 800-1000-1200 rpm, but if I recall correctly it is diminshing returns from 1200 upwards.

One engineer said to me that that at 1400+ the loading on most bearings with a heavy load just wasn't worth thetrouble (as energy squares with speed) and just made them less reliable, but this was some years ago.

some good advice, but circumstances changed - machine broken now so just had to get on and order something quick ! Went for the hotpoint in the end as it had the biggest drum (size does matter...) hope I wont regret it.

Had an interesting chat with a kitchen rep recently when talking about Miele, etc.

He said people who bought Miele 10 years ago are kicking themselves as their machines might still be running no problems, but they've probably tripled their outlay in running costs as the machines these days (for £200) use less than half the amount of power and a fifth less water than the Miele from 10 years ago.

Recon he's right???

Half right

Modern machines use less power and less water and are in the skip after 2 to 3 years

I was shot down on the last washing machine thread. My parents bought Miele washing and dish washers about 10 years ago still going strong.
A budget choice is an Indesit Moon. But others have said they are not reliable. I like them and will still get one in my new kitchen to avoid the rip off integrated ones.

This....plus he wasn't selling Miele. I bought one recently, and the difference between it and (several) previous machines is astounding. I know much of the weight is down to the concrete dampers, but in comparison, this one takes 2 men and a boy to move around, compared to SWMBO who could shift the old one with the same ease that she wields her make-up bag.

And I'm not on a water meter.
