Life without curtains

We have curtains throughout our house, most of which are rarely or never closed (dining room, spare bedrooms, hallways etc). We only use the bedroom ones daily (and not always as we have shutters too) and the ones in the lounge are used only in the winter to keep the heat in.

I am moving ( did I mention that before!!) and cannot see why we need curtains at all at the new place. Obviously the OH is nesting and wants to spunk £1K a window on fancy curtains but to be frank with the exception of one ground floor bathroom and bedroom, and the master bedroom none of the other rooms are really viewable ny neighbours or passers-by.

Have you/do you live without curtains and did it make yor life £10K worse?

Oddly the woman opposite has those fancy 'puddled' curtains in the 'country house' stylie, and ended up putting up blackpout blinds in the bedrooms because opening and shutting the curtains and getting them to 'look right' every morning was taking too much time. That is exactly my point, we think we need them but in fact we rarely do.

Reduce echo even if not closed
Keep warmth in
Houses without any look clinical/office to me.

we have a set over patio poors and in 3rd bedroo but all other windows are decent thick roman blinds

we only have curtains in the downstairs rooms, no need for them upstairs

We only have curtains in the bedrooms, and that's mainly because some guests can't sleep if it's light, and many of them come from towns and don't feel 'safe' unless they close curtains at night.

We only have blinds in most of our rooms. We have light nets and thin black curtains in the dinning room as there are patio doors there and this is only to keep the sun from burning through and heat in in the Winter.

Landing window has a floor length net and our bedroom have a colour net and blind.

I don’t like curtains and it suits our decor to have clean lines.

The only curtain in our house is the one painted on the lounge wall

Moved to a new house in 2009 and have not put up any curtains. We kept the blind for the master bed window and blinds for kitchen, but no curtain elsewhere.

Took me about three years to put up curtains and blinds. Really needed them in the lounge mainly to stop draft from the patio windows. Other than that no curtains on the front (mid terrace) and velux upstairs.

Had a couple of interesting moments when the window cleaner turned up sometimes

We have curtains at the windows, but mainly for decorative purposes, they are never closed except for the bedrooms.

Simple and cheaper answer. Brick up the windows. Job done.

Who supplied them Mikees, they seem like a good and long term compromise.

Have blinds in every room and have done for 7 years - £1.5k for the house (4-bed)

Another vote for a set of quality wooden slat blinds downstairs and a fabric roll up blackout blinds upstairs. The only curtains in the house should be of the beef variety. IMO.

We've got shutters downstairs also. Found they did a better job at heat loss prevention during the winter than curtains did. They're split in the middle so I can close the bottom half for a bit more privacy (tall windows).

I think my anti-curtain sentiments came from living on the 19th floor of a tower block for a long time...anyone who wanted to see in was going to have to make a serious effort, and if all they got to see was my flabby naked form then good luck to them!
