Painter/decorator, what's the going rate?

I hope the PH massive can help.
We need a few rooms painting and wall papering as well as doors etc.

Just don't know the going rate. Is it by the square meter? Or by the hour?

We ve not long had a few rooms and a ceiling done and the bloke charged us £10 an hr, which i was thought was reasonable? we suplied paint etc but he came with his own brushes/roller and stuff.
