We have a tall Electrolux fridge which is now several years old but still working fine. However, the door seems to have dropped, to the extent that it is now so low that the light switch doesn't trigger and the light stays on all the time.

(I know the light stays on, not because I've gone all 'foil hat' and open it quickly to catch it out, but because the bulb gets hot and is affecting the top shelf of the fridge!) You can actually just see into the inside of the fridge through a small gap at the top of the door opposite the hinge.

Any ideas what might be causing it or how best to fix it? We don't keep anything unusually heavy in the door shelves. There does seem to be a little give in the door, but I can't quite work out how to remedy it. Are they adjustable in the normal course of events, or is it more likely to be fatigue around the weight-bearing brackets?

Keen to repair rather than replace if possible.

There will be a pin on a bracket on the bottom. This will probably be fixed by 2 or 3 screws, which sound like they have come loose and the door has dropped. Fridge will need up ending though.

Remove light bulb and keep a torch next to the fridge.

Thanks for the tips, men. I have a day at home on Tuesday and so will empty and up-end the thing then.

ETA. To Paul Hogan. It's not the lack of light that bothers me as much as my contribution to global cooling!

Many fridges allow the door hinges to be moved to the other side. If its the plastic insert in the door that has gone, you have a chance.

I used this trick to get a few more years out of the fridge... until the other side dropped as well.

Are you sure it is the hinge?

Around the inside of the door is ( on many fridges ) an alooominum strip that holds the door gasket.
If too many of bolts that hold that strip are undone at one time the door can take on a sort of three dimensional trapezoid shape.

It is possible some may have loosened. Weight of door etc etc.

Sorted the fridge today. Managed to get the door off and then packed the bottom bracket with a couple of washers to raise the whole thing. It now seems fine, although I wasn't able to work out why it fell in the first place.
Anyway, job jobbed; thanks for all the comments and suggestions.
