Looks like air source might be a viable option for us, but want to cut through the bullst. I've followed up a couple of links Red Leicester's posted but the GSHP bloke talked me out of ground sourced and the other option is too far north to want to talk to me.

Why? I had a couple of bods in from a local supplier to look at a biomass and solar hot water installation and we were talking about another property I am about to renovate. I said I was going to go for ASHP on that and as one they both said "Noooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!". Their view was that you might as well just go for electric heating as put in ASHP due to the running costs of the latter.

This really is a subject that is shrouded in mystery and confusion!

Mostly because there's no scope for UFH so it's marginal given the size and age of the place, and we don't have 3 phase. And that's before you start working out where to put the four 50m trenches through a mature garden.

ASHP is also marginal but less disruptive and we're looking into topping up with oil or wood.
