I have had differing information from a kitchen fitter, kitchen designer and the actual hob supplier.

We are having a new kitchen fitted and we want the induction hob as close to a side brick wall as possible. This is at the end of the run of cupboards and will not have anything above it except the extractor.

The manufacturer shows 50mm from the side wall, the fitter reckons 150mm and the designer 300mm.

I realise that there will be no space to put anything to that side of the hob but there is 3 metres of open space the other side.

I surfed the net but could not come with a definitive answer although most seem to follow the manufacturers figures.

Any ideas?

I'd go with the manufacturers. If it's a brick wall a bit of warmth isn't going to really hurt it. A red hot wok overhanging the edge of the hob and getting very close to said wall might soil whatever finish it has though??

Saying that it is dead useful to have space either side of the hob. You can do all your chopping/prep on one side, cook the ssmilehit out of it, then dump it on your plates on t'other side.

Induction hobs are smart btw. Amazing how quick mine wil boil a full pan of water in only a couple of minutes. It makes a rather scary hum on "Power" mode though, and your fillings get a bit warm.

Id imagine 50mm wouldn't give you enough room for saucepan handles sticking out to the side.

We always work on 100mm - never had any problems so far.

If you do use big pans/woks, then they might not sit right on the hob if you just leave 50mm.

Also sounds silly, but wont be very 'comfy' stiring the pots if the wall protudes significantly.

50mm and the wall will be covered in splatter when you cook!

It can be 50mm from the back wall so I don't see why it can't be 50mm from a side wall too. They don't (can't) get hotter than 100C unless you're frying.

Ours is great. I can't see any reason why it can't be next to a wall, but as said you'll have a problem with handles, stirring, cleaning the wall etc.

If you have so much space the other side, why can't you move the hob? Is it an extractor issue? If so, maybe you'd be better off putting the hob in the right place and fitting a nice quiet little extractor fan on the outside wall, it will still do the job from 3-4' away.

As I NEVER use the hob I am not bothered about space around it but I did get the "cook" to stand next to the wall to see the problem. She is left-handed so there is no problem for her.

Her kitchen...her choice.....

Thanks
