Now before I start this is my workshop door, I am not a criminal (more of an idiot).

I have a brick built workshop which I have turned into a gym. To stop it being broken into I used a padlock to secure the door which comes from a 'sold secure' motorcycle lock and chain I bought when I had my bike.

All was fine until I lost the only key for it at the weekend, having looked everywhere (including phoning the shops I visited that day to see if it had been handed in) I have accepted it's completely lost! I work quite late so when I get home it's dark, so this weekend I will have to somehow get into it. Does anyone know how to get at this? All my tools ironically are locked in there so I will need to borrow some. My friends offered me his angle grinder will this do it?

Ahem. I've given similarly 'secure' locks a few taps with a sledge hammer and they just fall off. Or use an angle grinder.

Angle grinder should do the trick. May need to attack the door furniture rather than the padlock to make it a little easier......

How Powerfully built are you ?
Fairly, I have a goatee too so should just rip it off with my bare hands biggrin

If I attack the door welds I will need to find a welder ranting

Use a thin blade on a small grinder, like these. Cut either in the gap between the hasp, or yank the padlock as much as you can to one side.

You realise that just after you do it, you'll come accross the key! wobble

Petrol disc cutter, straight between the clasps, in the middle of the padlock. 10 seconds and you'll be in.

Grab a local builder passing in his van, they usually carry one in the back. Jobs a good-un!

Sorry to seem obtuse, but you could always call a local locksmith for a quote.

When we moved into our current house, the patio door key had been lost. Locksmith in, opened with no damage, new barrel and keys, out again for about 60quid.

Would be a bit more these days I guess, but a lot less hassle fixing stuff after the butchery approach. Also, I would hate to see you with a face and arms full of shattered angle grinder disk when you don't quite get it right with a thin disk on hardened metal through a tight gap, without proper protective equipment.

got to agree with the locksmith idea, I had a good or i thought it was bike lock which I put on a container. Next time i go to use the container the only key i have snaps inside the lock.
Called a lock smith out and he was in it in seconds. I was socked how easy it was for him to pick it.
was not expensive can't remember the exact cost but worth it.

Angle grinder.... obviously.

Thin disk might do it, but depending on the metal it might take a long while. Then you still have to open the padlock which wont be easy with one cut through it. I would go for the door - cut the mechanism rather than the lock and you'll be in in seconds. Any half decent welder can weld it back up just as quickly as you broke into it.

Have you got CCTV by any chance?

I've found lost bunches of keys several times by reviewing video footage including once putting them absentmindedly into a carrier bag which then went into a dustbin.

This all seems a touch excessive. Can you not just drill the lock barrel until the pins fall out and unlock with a flat screwdriver?

Use thermite. I have no doubt it would go through the lock.

But you would still have a locked door, and a shed with lots of fresh air.
