We're having the painters in and they've sanded the floor in the entrance hallway. They are suggesting a matt varnish to finish; I quite fancy wax as I think it might leave even less of a sheen.

Any views? Which would be longer-wearing? It's not a huge area so we can always do it again ourselves in 12 months' time or whatever.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Cheers,

Rich

We used a matt water based stain, with a water based polish I think. 5 coats but it dries very quickly

Try Osmo oil. Very tough and leaves a nice low-gloss finish.

Tung oil would also work and gives a nice matte finish.

Thanks for the replies-

I think we don't want to stain it at all, just finish/protect it, so want something clear. I assume tung oil isn't clear as such?

Osmo were good when I tested their exterior wood oil on a spot on the outside of our house (it is predominantly wood outside), then not so good when I ordered a big tin and it seems now to be a different bloody colour, much darker. So not that impressed TBH.

Ah, no, it stains darker.
