Our kitchen sink has now become blocked - probably because of certain individuals putting various foodstuffs down the plug hole rather than in the bin.

The usual trick of Mr Muscle drain cleaner followed by boiling water hasn't worked this time, so I need advice on how to fix the damn thing!

I realise taking the U bend out would be a good idea, but I would like to avoid that if at all possible as all my tools are at home - 100 miles away.

Any ideas? smile

Good old sink plunger, retro rules!

I had a similar issue, tried the chemicals and it did pretty much nothing. Borrowed my dads plunger and it was shifted in a matter of seconds.

most fittings are that large they are hand tightened, what tools are you thinking you need?

Just make sure you put the basin under the u-bend before you take it off.

The back nuts holding the trap onto the pipework and sink waste are hand tight. You'll be fine removing and refitting this without any tools.

Really? That is very useful to know!

Our sink back at home is very, very old and you need tools to get the U bend off it.

Thanks guys smile

Use a metal coat hanger, make a slight bend at the end, use it to gently loosen whatever's in the trap, then use hot water, a bit of washing up liquid, boiling water etc. You should be able to dislodge whatever's there without using any force.

If the sink is blocked high up in the drain, this. I have a different model but it is very effective on general crud dropped down the sink. It uses a high pressure water jet to clear the blockage, much more effective than a plunger.

If you are suffering pipes clogged by the folks putting grease and fat down that coagulates in the pipework further down the drain as it cools, that will not work, and you will need something very long to go right down the pipes. It is very messy and frankly I would get the pros in with a pressure toll of that is the case.

I cleaned out a hard plug of solidified fat / coffee grounds from the kitchen plumbing in my student house simply by unscrewing the external (thankfully plastic) pipework and using a Wet and Dry vac to suck out the gunk. smile

I was going to edit it to U bend for a laugh, but weren't 100% sure if that was what you meant.

If it's grease causing the problem then use a hairdryer to warm the pipe. Start at the lowest part of the pipe and work your way up to the sink.

Don't touch metal parts whilst doing just in case!

Result - the things on the U bend are literally impossible to undo by hand.

Ended up unscrewing the plug hole which releases the pipe, and then turning the pipe round to empty the contents while using a modified coat hanger to fish out all the ste that was in there.

Now the sink works!

Thanks guys smile
