Light bulb quality
Discussion
Do normal domestic light bulbs vary in quality?
We have lots in the kitchen (25) mainly a mix of SES & 12v halogen capsules.
I have kept a record (sad I know) of when I replace the individual lamps, sometimes they only last a few weeks. The SES all came from been & queued, the halogen are GE I think.
There is no pattern to the longevity, i.e it's not one single fitting that eats lamps, the time they last is completely random.
Is there a difference in quality or is everything we buy now crap?

speaking as a professional spark with many years experience, basically they're all crap today. Dunno why. The "halogen energy saver" (the incandescent lamps that use around 70% power) seem to last better though, worth trying those.
as for the G4's (12v capsules) they should last a decent time, sure you're not overating the fittings? If you can't see a marking I'd stick with 10w.

To be fair, these aren't really a problem, other than the actual fitting which gives a border-line connection, but that's another issue (crap quality again, although the purchase price didn't reflect that
)It's these that cause me most grief

So any ideas where they are concerned would be appreciated.
Looked at the Philips and at £20 each they had better be good!!
When we did up the farm, we fitted 4 2-bulb wall light fittings in the living room. and fitted 8 GE "longlife" 40w Candle bulbs.
The first one didn't blow for two years, and the final one six months or so later.
I haven't been able to find the same bulbs since, and anything else lasted a few months tops.
Edit - in the kitchen we had 9 12w "downlighters" suspended from wires stretched above the work surfaces. These were from IKEA, and we never had to replace a bulb all the time we were there.
The 12v ceiling mounted ones in the bathroom blew a lot more regularly.
don't get me started on the f
king 240v GU10's in our current rented kitchen. Within 3 months we had replaced every single one more than once, we've been here a year now and I've lost count. Plus we spend a lot of time cooking under a single 50w bulb. I'm on the verge of just sticking individual 12v transformers on them
