I have a number of patches of weeds in my lawn, they look a bit like clover but have very small darker green leaves that turn almost black over a period of time and produce small yellow flowers every so often. The weed is spreading slowly but surely and seems immune from the usual weed and feed formulas.

Firstly does anyone know what type of weed this might be from my limited description?

Secondly, I can't really spot weed it with a weed gun as the patches are too big and numerous, short of trying to dig them all up and repair the lawn is there a lawn friendly weedkiller I can use to treat it?

Cheers as ever

Sounds like 'Yellow Oxalis',if so get rid as soon as you can, each flower head explodes shooting the seeds a distance away, spreads quickly if left.

'Verdone' usually works on most lawn weeds.

This is what it looks like.

Could be another trefoil, Black medick: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medicago_lupulina

No easy way to control in lawns as all the stuff that worked has been banned. If the patches are almost solid weed you could use glyphosate, then reseed or returf.

Thanks for the replies, it looks like Yellow Oxalis. It has been there for some time and seems to spread quite slowly. If I use Verdone, will this damage the surrounding lawn?

If I have to dig this out it will be a big job, the area of lawn in question is probably 80 x 80 feet with small patches all over the place, bloody weeds! shoot

As recommened, "verdone" does the business, kills all weeeds and leaves grass untouched. If you have a larger lawn, buy the concentrated, it lasts ages as you only use a very small amount. I'm highly impressed with the results, we moved in our current property 5 months ago and the lawns were more weeds than grass, now they are totally weed free and lush green. I find it takes a month for the weeds to vanish.

Can you treat a lawn at this time of year?

LMGTFY

"Verdone Extra targets the growth hormone of broad leaved weeds, therefore needs to be applied to weeds which are actively growing between April and September."

Verdone is a lawn (ie selective) weddkiller; however if you overdose it can and will damage grass too. People like me used to spend a great deal of time working out optimum doses and writing instructions so read them smash

That said, people either use half as much 'to make it go further' and wonder why it doesn't work, or use twice as much 'to make sure' and wonder why their grass dies.

Not really, treatment is always best in the growing season early spring, then the weeds are susceptible to the weed killer.

The weather is mild, I reckon it would be worth a shot.

Didn't need you to GTFM because I'm not planning to treat my lawn, but I'm sure the OP appreciates the assist. wink

Have you thought about bringing Green Thumbs in for a year? Our lawn was atrocious, so we contractednthem in at about £30 / qtr & it is absolutely perfect now (although, the grass now grows bloody fast!!!)

Agree, and i have been doing jobs in the garden that other years were not possible.

But i believe lawns are different, for me it is best to keep the grass longish this time of year, get the frosty cold weather out of the way, then give the lawn tender loving care at the start of spring

Plus long grass deters weeds - especially low growing spreading weeds that the OP has.
