Brochures make it sound good of course, but any real world experiences of these air heat exchange systems would be good to hear of

Depends which sort you get hold of, and what you want to do with it.

Panasonic Aquareas are hot water heat pumps, some need refrigerant work and some don't.

If you only want to heat water for a domestic cylinder these units are over capacity (and overpriced).

So, what do you want to heat?

Correct me is I'm wrong anywhere:

So they're air-source heat pumps.

They take heat from the external environment, concentrate it, and circulate it around the house to keep the house warm.

Essentially the opposite of what air-conditioning does.

They can be topped up with solar power.

My problem with the system is when the weather is really cold, and it is night, then the system will be running on the electric heater element.

As I understand it, "Ground Source" heat pumps would be a better alternative. As I understand it, in the summer the ground is effectively a thermal mass, and will absorb heat, storing it for a much longer time. The heat can be extracted through the winter for a lot longer.

As always, I'm no expert, and keen to learn, so please correct me if I have something wrong.

The problem seems to be the upfront cost of fitting a ground-source system.
