Son looks like he and his mate are dead set on this particular flat where the letting agent is ripping them off (still my view) for £100 for this credit check lark. See here I presume he can ask them to see the report they will have paid for? I'm not even convinced they do them half the time.

Anyway, he's done his figures he reckons and it'll all be affordable ... we'll see. Almost his seecond line when he said what they proposed was "But is it okay if I come back here if it doesn't work out?"

Rent for a two-bed flat - 2nd floor, modern as fk, is £575. I've tried totting up a rough list of other expenses - it helps that his mate already shares a place at the mo within spitting distance so costs would be the same roughly - council tax etc. Places don't come up in this particular block much so they're keen to grab it. I reckon his mate is keener as HIS landlord lives above his flat! It's all happening a bit too quick as he had this planned for next year, but you can't tell them that these days ... sadly, they do as they like and don't listen!

His phone is circa £50 a month as a kick off! And half the rent, say £300. His wages last him about two weeks now as it is - so I'd be interested in what others spend in this situation. He says he's never going to be going out now at the weekend and the bookies takings will be down - there's a Coral's within walking distance sadly and he likes a flutter ...

Cheers

Its a lot better than buying a place!

Might be a good way to make him grow up a bit (with respect to handling money).

Could be a good lesson.

It does, thanks but it would help more oif you had shown some fuigures!

He has perfect eyesight and doesn't drive (I know, I know) - so this cuts down on expense. Also, they wil have no landline in the flat - he livs on his mobile anyway - it's more important than oxygen. He also has no credit card (yet) ...

So it may be doable, who knows!

To share:
Rent (water rate is usually included):300
Council Tax :50-70
Internet, tv, phone:15-30
Power: 20-40

Individual Cost:
Travel: bus, train
Clothing: new every week if Camp.
Food: 50-80 if cooking
Socialising: depends on vaginal choices and gambling addiction.
Mobile: 50
Savings: make sure he puts away some amount every month....this is a lesson for the future.

My figures per month are:-

Flat Rent £450
Council Tax £90
Water £25ish
Power £70-80ish
Phone £0 (got rid of my BT line)
Internet £35
Mobile phone £10 (got an awesome deal as I haggled)
Home contents Insurance £20 including personal possesions when out and about (watch, phone & cash)

I live on my own so his might slightly lower, but then im 30 and hes 20 so his monthly spend on going out and food might be higher.

Dump the phone and save £600pa. Contrary to popular belief you do not NEED a mobile phone; with a little planning you can manage without one, or at least just have a PAYG for emergencies.

YOU don't maybe Simpo, but like me, you're the other side of 40 hehe

It virtually never leaves his sweaty palm (even in his pocket)

He got agitated once when I wrestled it from his grasp and put it on the mantlepiece ...

Intersting figs though guys ...

My house bits are
Council Tax £99
Electric and Gas £45
Water £17
House Insurance £32
Mobile Phone £25
House Phone £13
Internet £9
Gas servicing £16

I spend an average of £170 a month on groceries (means anything from Tesco or Morrissons so cleaning stuff and toiletries too), then on top of that I have TV licence, car/bike insurance tax servicing, breakdown cover, gym, petrol. That's without buying clothes, books, etc. or going out!

He must be permanently on the phone (I assume we are talking mobile here), either that or he really needs to look around for a better deal.

I am 21, here are my figures:-

Rent - £535
Council Tax - £90
Gas/Electricity - £65
Water - £34
Mobile - £30
Sky/Phone/Internet - £40
Contents Insurance - £7
Car - £200
Petrol - £100
Car Insurance - £60

Food - £250 (OH pays for food as she is a student)

It is not cheap especially when funding the majority on your own, but it is worth it!
