After reading a couple of posts here about the tumbling hous e prices in USA, I had a look on Ebay.co.uk, and then Ebay.com

Sure enough, there are properties being bank sold, for very little money.
Even owners are selling properties, before the bank repossesses.

Am I right in saying, it is pointless a UK person buying a house there, as we could never be allowed to live there?
By that I mean, even though one would own a property there, it still would not give us the permission needed to live there indefinatly?

In some places banks are bulldozing repossessed houses and giving the plot to the local authority.

You can buy there without too much difficulty, but it's tricky to get permission to settle permanently. There are downsides - the cost of healthcare for example, if you don't have an employer to cover take care of it for you.

Buy it, let it out for 11 months a year, and have two fortnight's per year holiday there yourself?

I doubt the sums would work out though scratchchin

I presume that apart from being in a warzone, the above will incurr some kind of property taxes or the like?

Just amazing some of the prices of the properties.
I just looked at Houston, as I lived there for a while.
Some real bargain looking houses available there.
Some one must be losing out big time.

For $100,000 some of them houses look really good.

With some of these dirt cheap properties I believe you are also buying the debt attached to it as well as the house itself.

OK, I see what you are saying about teh debt.
However, a lot of them say there is no back taxes, or any thing else.

Then getting back to my first post, and teh question,
If you bought a house there, fully paid 100% could you live there if you were self sufficient, and didn't need to work?

AFAIK you can buy a house in many different countries, but it doesn't give you any rights to live there.

There are UK investors who have houses in the US which they rent out - I probably read about it at thisismoney.co.uk

If you want a cheap property in another country you can actually live in, look at Normandy (Northern France)

You can buy a house for like £30-40k in a nice rural setting. Been looking myself. Seems there are some bargains to be had if you dont mind living in the middle of nowhere surrounded by frenchies.

It sounded alright until that point.

Drifting even further from the thread title, the other snag with France is the cost of living is insane there now.

I have a chum who owns a German gun enplacement there. Knowing him as I do it must be cheap.

Some people take the Zombie apocolypse scenario way too seriously.

Nope. It's not got a pool and I dread to think the expense or removing the Barbara Cartland decor

At that price it's paid itself for after a couple of family holidays.

It's 8000 sq ft. No way on earth that 2.5k is the buy price. I suspect you are taking over the mortgage in addition.
