long story short. my house shares an ancient lead water main with the house next door. i want it gone as its in the wrong place and not ideal being lead.

the two elderly ladies nextdoor are not interested in replacing it which is fine by me as to run it where the old one was would be impossible it runs under the main sewer and through 2 wells the stop tap for my house is at least 7-8 ft down.

iv had all new floors in the house so i had a new plastic main put in under the slab andout to the front of the house.

my house and nextdoor have only one stop tap in the street. this is only about 2ft down. can i just dig out and connect to this or to i need to get the water lot out to put in a new tap?

out of interest the street is plastic pipe and tap. my understanding is that its not allowed to connect plastic to lead?

They must be allowed to connect lead to plastic because that's what you have now. I expect they will agree to install another tee in the plastic main plus a meter for your house for a fee.

We replaced the incoming main at our house a year or two ago, from lead to plastic. Severn Trent offer a free(makes a change) lead replacement policy. They won't replace the bit of pipe you own, but will make the connection and replace any lead their side of the stop cock for nowt. It would be worth considering a water meter at the same time.

WRT the next door neighbours connection, if you terminate your old lead pipe, it must be done at the junction of the two pipes, as leaving a dead branch will mean standing water and potentially cause health issues.

It was worth doing for us just for the increased flow rate from the new pipe!

as far as the connection for next door. it is not possible to dig out to the joint of the old pipe to cap it. its somewhere under 7-8 ft of soil 2 wells (one i did'nt no about until the digger nearly fell through it) and the main sewer as well as the foundations of both houses.

also the house had been empty for a few years before i got it and they are stil alive so cant be much of a risk.

ill give STW a ring and see what they say. but dont want a water meter if i can help it
