I have a Malm bed stead which is only about 18 months old. The slatted base on it is from an older (same size) Ikea bed, and is made up of 2 individual bases.

The bed has recently started creaking like hell, even when you just move about on it, let alone whilst partaking in some horizontal sports!

I'm pretty sure it is the slatted bases, as ive retightned up all the fixings, and the bed stead itself is very sturdy.

Should i replace the slatted bases with a fresh one from Ikea, or do i make my own slatted base using wood from a merchant? The advantage i can see from making my own is that i could fix it to the bed frame in such a way as to eradicate the squeaks altogether.

Thoughts please.

It's not often I check there are no children in the room before I click on a PH link smile Try waxing the slats. You may find lubricant does a better job than making things tighter.

Put something between the slats and the base before tightening up. I had this problem with a bed and used some fabric.

Dust it with a bit of talcum powder...

edited to say wax may make it worse and once its on there...

We have the same bed, dusting the slats with a bit of talk where they contact the runners cured it completely

Buy another bed, from some where that sells proper beds.

In 10 years we have bought several beds from Ikea, none have lasted more then 2 years before needing replacing. Last year I gave up and spent 3K on a bed from Dreams (who rather rudely did not live up to all the bad press and delivered it bang on time) So far so good the bed is still a solid as they day it was installed and the mattress still looks and feels like new, and every nights sleep just reminds me that I should have done bought it a long time ago.

I think Ikea stuff is alright. My Malm frame is going strong despite having been moved from a previous address, usually the death knell. One of the slats has broken after a knee slam on it involving a rather athletic young lady, however still works well.

Memory foam mattress has gone rather flat in spots though- Not bad I suppose given 4 year's use and the massive price differential with a "proper" bed.

Well i could buy about 20 Ikea beds for 3K, so i don't see the point of buying a 3k bed. Even if each one lasted 3 years, i think that would outlast a 3k bed?

Worst 'Ive got a 3k bed' post ever. You can have any base you like. (And Ikea are very sturdy) the money is better spent on the mattress.

No i don't, i've stuffed some old socks in between the bed slat bases and the bed frame. All sorted now.
