Hot tub jets falling out?

My inlaws are house-sitting for some friends atm and we were invited around yesterday.
Their friends have a hot tub which my 8 year old happily splashed about in all day, turning all the jets on etc.
Trouble is that when we were about to leave the inlaws found that 4 vent covers and 3 conical jets had come out and two of the conical jets had bits of plastic missing (later found at the bottom of the tub).
Now I'm sure I saw these thing just popping out when my son was using the tub on full power, does this happen often? There was one conical jet floating on top before we even started using it.
The inlaws are accusing my son of twisting these jets off and damaging them which he wouldn't do.
We've said we'll pay for any damage but they're not happy.
Question is, do these covers/jets take some getting off and can they just be blown off with the power of the water.
Also, how much of a repair bill can I expect?

In the same vain, if they were house sitting, why did they invite everyone round for a party? Are they 18 or something?I would tell them to go jump!
The house was their responsibility at the time, therefore anything that gets broken while they are there is their responsibility as well. Imagine them trying to explain why the hot tub is broken to the owners, "Oh we just invited a few friends over while you were away........."

unless they screww off then thyre not designed to come off without some force. check to see if they can be crewed back on. IF not then check the others to see if any are damaged or loose? IF not then I would suggest that maybe the little fella could be responsible.
There are many different makes of Hot Tubs but the ones Ive seen dont have any parts which can be blown off by the force of the water.

We have the same hot tub Flip, the same thing has just happened with our jets. Went in a few weeks ago and ended up with 3 or 4 vents bobbing around with us. I think the seals must just wear out and give up the ghost, it's nothing your lad has done wrong. We found the broken bits lying in the bottom of ours too.
I think they just need new seals, but i'm not sure. It happens by itself anyway, although I imagine people being in it actually makes them break.
And our Tub has screw-type jets, just push 'em in and twist until they don't shoot back off. There are some premium jets available (I think) but we don't have them.

This is flipatron's wife. The owners of the house had said it was okay for us to visit and to use the hot tub. Kids were pretty much supervised (youngest is 8 so we kept an eye on him - only left him alone for a couple of minutes, there was always someone else around even if not watching his every move!) When we arrived one of the larger vents was floating on the surface, when we left three had come off and one had broken with bits in the bottom of the pool. The large plastic covers, according to my 13 year old, kept popping off and he kept putting them back on as there was quite a strong suction when they weren't on. Tbh, none of us know exactly what has gone on, my son says the side vents kept coming off when the full whirlpool thing was turned on (being kids, they didn't take too much notice of this happening and just put them back on again).
When we got home, I had a fraught phone call with my very upset mother and my very angry father who seemed to be saying that my kids had caused the damage by 'messing about' and 'larking around'. That wasn't what we saw (although there was a small window of opportunity where it is possible they did this without us seeing them) or what the kids have told us. When I said this, they implied my kids wouldn't tell us the truth and I was being defensive. I said we would pay for it, despite not being 100% convinced the kids are to blame. It's all very awkward and no-one is speaking as of now. Ho hum.
Anyone else's experience of these hot tubs welcome!

You'll have to find out the make/model of hot-tub, to be able to get the correct information regarding replacement & costs etc.
The jets differ greatly between makers, there is not a standard type..
Should be a plate on the hot tub somewhere giving this info (mine has a plate at ground level giving all this info)

Good to know that they just come out by themselves though, I've been grilling Mikey all weekend but he seems to be telling the truth.
Hot tubs are not for kids to lark around in all day. Tubs are for sitting down and relaxing in, kids cant sit still for a minute and are constantly turning the controls on/off and pulling on bits etc. They are a pain when it comes to tubs, so I'd guess that yes, the kds probably are responsible for the damage, even if it wasnt malicious. Been there with our tub.
Its one of those mistakes you make and dont repeat.
So i guess the inlaws are worried about what the neighbors will say and how they will react. It would be best to clear the air with all involved, make an apology, and offer to pick up the bill for any replacement jet fitment that might be needed. They should not be too expensive. DONT try and say you think they may have been damaged before hand, even if you beleive this may be true, because you have no proof and you can only cause a bitterness by trying to deflect blame.
Its better to say sorry/will fix it. Live an learn, send the kids to the local pool instead of using someone elses hot tub....

The big ones are the grills that cover the water inlet into the pumps - pretty dangerous with them missing if the plumbing inside is done poorly (i.e. cheap tub from ting tong land) - kids have drowned by getting sucked to the bottom of the tub (albeit not that likely with an 8 year old to be fair).
