Location, location, location

Just watching now. It bugs me every week. How does someone who sells bits of crap on the Internet and someone who tinkers with old Land Rovers have a £400000 budget for a house? Classic non jobbers, the likes of which are on every TV property show, yet somehow have loads money and a big mortgage offer! Similarly frustrating, why does someone who runs an internet business simply 'have to' live near London, severely compromising what they can afford...it's the same every week. For £400000 where I live you can get a five bed detached, double garage, 4 acre pad with a lake. I just don't get it. PMSL each week when people pay 000's more for tiny flats that i wouldn't even be comfortable in for a weekend away than I paid for a 2000 sq ft house in Lincolnshire. Just don't get why anyone 'has to' live down south. Weigh it up. Move north. Have a better life in a nicer, higher spec house, with nicer cars. Rant over!

I occasionally catch this on the TV's at the gym (bikes have headphone sockets - everything else on subtitles). Some woman was looking for a flat in Greater London - budget 250k. Most of the pokey little holes they visited I wouldn't have paid £25000 let alone £250000.

Then there are the totally unrealistic ones. "I want a house that is x, x & x in this area for my budget of 2 & 6", yet the cheapest house that meets their spec is way over budget - no wonder they need help finding somewhere.

Yeah amazing where they get their money from. Especially the demic with the land rovers. On every estate in the country there is always 1 scruffy git with old land rovers piled up. Usually their house is in as good as nick as their cars.

From what I've seen big boned birds have more money.... Must rethink ....

I suppose you generally stick roughly in the area you know and feel comfortable in. Moving regions does feel like moving to another world.

Don't some people commute from Lincs into London? That must be hell, not to mention expensive.

I noticed this when I went to a cousin's wedding down south earlier in the year.

House was very similar to mine in terms of space. It was nice, but nothing special.
Theirs was a newish build, but mine has some grass and outdoor space. Same number of bedrooms and driveway size.

Their price - 450k+ (some area of Harrow)
Mine - 185k (bought last year)

I was like WTF.

25 years ago Balham was a complete sthole.

Last week they showed a bloke who bought a 1.5 bedroom flat in need of a total refurb for £375K!!! He did it up (on the cheap) and it was now a small 2 bed flat (with a very small bathroom as he nicked some space from it for the bedroom) and it was worth £475K. In Balham!! Madness. Pure madness.
