I recently had a kitchen installed and while it seems to have the foundations of a good looking kitchen I can't help but feel it is lacking in some ways. The obvious starting point would be a back splash but all the sample tiles we have tried look wrong.

So, what do you think my kitchen needs?

Some colour, or some textures.

Yes, I realize this is the wrong place! If it counts I do have a 58" Panasonic TV in the adjoining family room.

Ahhh. Excellent thank you mods. This feels like a better place to be.

That's a lovely kitchen. I can't WAIT for our new house to be finished as the new kitchen's so different to our current place.

This.
Perhaps it seems a little to clinical, being very neutral in the palette?
Bright coloured tiles for the splashback as a contrast?

In all seriousness, its white and dark grey. They're really the only colours in there so it needs something....I just don't know what hehe

Thank you for the feedback so far. The problem was that the kitchen designer didn't do the back splash tiles or the appliances. As a result it feels like it has good components but doesn't tie together. We need some colour but none of the tiles we have tried so far have worked.

It's not that clear in the photos but the cabinets are white and the island drawers are near black. The counter top is grey to tie them together. One suggestion is Carrara marble tiles as shown on many photos on google for this type of kitchen but that wouldn't introduce much colour.

Wife doesn't like being called "maid" and son would be horrified to see her scantily clad.

I agree it looks a bit cold. I used glass splashbacks - with white backing they have a nice greeny colour and add something without saying 'Woo look at me!'

You can have them made to any size/shape/colour you like.

Son - Bed.

Wife - Tell her you're getting a scantily clad maid in because you want her to relax. That should do her it.

We do need an Au pair. Let me forward this thread on to my wife and see what she thinks.

I would have the blind darker, like the island to help contrast. Glass splashback is worth it, you don't have to go all the way around, maybe just behind the sink and hob. Also I don't feel the island lights suit it.

Actually I like the lights, but you need three as it's a magic number.

The island is deceptively large. It's 3 double cabinets size long. The lights are large as well so 3 wouldn't a work due to their size

I do have a 3rd and even larger one over the kitchen table though.

Sounds like we need colour in here. I think I may get a designer in to tie the elements together. We had thought of glass tiles but wanted to do something different around the oven and I do not have the creativity to design something that wouldn't look crap

Looking at the photos I now agree that 3 lights would look better but I'm not sure I want to open up the ceiling.
