First off I'll start with an apology for perhaps the most boring post ever, but....

We have just had the Christmas rubbish collection schedule and in their infinite wisdom, the council have decided to arrange it so that we will not have our bins collected for a month over the Christmas period.

In a house with two kids and all of the associated rubbish this generates over xmas this really boils my p**s. They have even advised that we cannot put out extra bags when they do resume collection as they will not take them and if the bin lid is open then the top bag will be removed and left.

Why do I pay council tax??? It appears I have to take the rubbish to the tip myself which will mean loading wet, smelly bags into my car to get them there.

Am I being an unreasanable person here or does anyone else think this is ridiculous?

Ridiculous. As a family of two, I always offer our neighbours (family of four) any spare space that we have in our bins. The amount of packaging that everyday stuff comes in always baffles me, never mind kids toys and all the extra rubbish Christmas brings with it.

Hard to argue with your comments to be honest - no bin collection for a month, especially at a time of year when there's going to be a lot of waste to collect is utterly absurd.

What has this got to do with cars?

Put it in the Lounge at least, or alternatively drive to the tip

Crithens, that's absurd. Regardless of the likelihood that everyone will exceed their quota (a wheelie bin full, we presume), a bin left unemptied for a month will surely present an appalling health and safety risk?

It would be like Christmas all month for the various wildlife which is happy to feed on rubbish, not to mention the smell. Try filling your kitchen bin, then leaving it for a month and see what state you find it in.

We must presume that the Councillors who made this decision also live in an area which will be affected. Perhaps write to them personally and ask how they plan to deal with the excess?

Simon.

It will stink his lounge out, best to leave it outside in his shed or garage.

rofl

We have the alternate bin weekly collection (black is recycle and green is landfill waste) and according to the nice schedule I have pinned up

Our collection day is Tuesday (but during holiday periods we get a couple of day max pushback on collections)

Dec 3rd - Black
Dec 10th - Green
Dec 17th - Black
Dec 24th - Green
Dec 31st - Black (revised date 2nd Jan)
Jan 7th - Green (revised date 8th Jan)

So in summary the longest I will have to wait for Green bin removal is 15 days and the longest I will have to wait for Black bin removal is 16 days

I'm OK with that but can understand why longer would cause people to question why they pay for a service that isn't provided

Anyway this really should be in the lounge

You need to be ruthless and methodical with your rubbish:

Seperate out recyclables into boxes/binbags in the shed garage. Only put genuinely smelly/dirty/greasy waste into the kitchen bin. You'll end up with a load of stuff in bags/boxes but you can dispose of them at your leisure.

I've had this in the past - complain to the council.

Mine changed their policy re collecting on bank holidays - either they would, or they'd collect the next day.

When I'm paying for a service I expect it, or a good discount.

its a prequel to my next post: 'How do I remove rotten food smells and stains from my cars upholstery?' wink

Sorry, yes it should be in the lounge, can a mod move it for me as I can't seem to do it?

I'm in Staffs, some good suggestions, I think writing to a local councillor is a good idea, conservatives rule the roost here BTW, not that this makes any difference to me, I don't like any politicians TBH

Remove anything that identifies yourself. Everything else in a nearby public bin.

Fly tip, the reason that they're not collecting is because your council don't want to pay holiday wages so there will be no one to catch you. Make sure there is nothing that can lead back to you and leave your bags at the council offices.

Thought that I should check out my council whilst I was thinking about it..

'We will collect extra household waste and recycling over the Christmas and New Year period, between the 27 December 2013 and 11 January 2014. Tie up your extra refuse in black bin bags and put the bags next to your green/grey bin on your scheduled collection day.'

You need to move somewhere better hehe

I'd give the story to the local media and play the public health angle. Then maybe you can see the Council's Head of Rubbish squirming on TV.

If you can't bring yourself to flytip, double or triple bag it and it shouldn't ooze into your car interior, although I'd still put down a layer of newspapers or plastic in case of leaks. If you keep the bags less than half full double/triple bagging is a lot easier.
