I have just noticed this morning my wheelie bin has decibel rating on it, 89dB Lwa seeing as you asked. What does this refer too, the noise it makes when my neighbours put their bin out at 11.30 at night? Where does this put it on the noise scale, at the RR Phantom end or the Lexus LFA at full chat? Quite curious to know the reason and I may have to start a 'show us your wheelie bin thread'smile

I think it's to do with the sound level the material makes when it it knocked - either onto the back of the truck or by the lid slamming. In my defence I have been to a factory where MGBs are made, and I have and one time taken delivery of 50,000 of the blighters...

Its the road noise level for the tyres. There should also be a fuel efficiency and wet grip indicator too.

Clearly not noisey enough after a PHer managed to tow one behind his Landrover yesterday for a mile or so.

A fine question, I've always assumed it's to demonstrate that if one was to be inside a wheelie bin with the lid down then any external forces to the exterior would not produce and internal acoustic shock that would damage your ears.

For example, say you'd inadvertently found yourself on a Golf driving range and taken shelter in an empty wheelie bin, you and your hearing would be safe being pelted with balls until helped arrived.

It's the sound level the bin lid makes when dropped shut from an angle of 90 degrees.

It's covered by an EU directive (what isn't?) and designed to minimise noise disruption for early morning collections.

The bins are designed in such a way that when the lid falls, it creates a cushion of air just before it shuts, minimising the noise though this rarely works.

That's what the lip that sits just inside the lid is for, if it's deformed the air cushion fails.

Aaaahhh...... that explains it, thank you, though I'm now wondering whether to go and buy an SPL meter to confirm if it really is 89dB.

Our council installed chips (RF tabs probably) to start weighing them. Most people drilled them out!

I just happen to have a db app on my phone downloaded at 4am one long long night when I was curious how loud baby BS2 was screaming.

I may well test my bins rating when I get home.

Can I ask what line of work you are in?

Only that it seems like a lot of time off work. You aren't a an iguanadon reenactor are you?
