It depends what they were doing, but in pure manufacturing they would probably have lost their jobs.Of course he could have kept manufacturing here, hit problems with build costs and got priced out of the market thus meaning that those in design and engineering who are employed here also lost their jobs.

Didn't 800 people lose their jobs when he moved production to Malaysia ? Of course he could have kept manufacturing here, hit problems with build costs and got priced out of the market thus meaning that those in design and engineering who are employed here also lost their jobs.

But arguably by cutting production cost by doing it the company has been able to thrive and employ a 1,000 people in the UK designing products. They are investing another £250 million here and are building the employment here up to 3,000.

Dyson is a one off in creativity and output. By restructuring his company to a lower cost base for production physically he was able to compete with the Chinese/Japanese/Taiwanese/etc producers copying his ideas and undercutting him. Long term he had no choice because otherwise he would have been priced out. He is building up the UK workforce on activities we can be competitive at like design and development. But in reality no electronic component manufacturers in Europe can compete with the far east cost base and Dyson was absolutely correct in that decision. Of such hard decisions are fortunes made and dynasties created.

Amen to that!! We did the same. Top range Dyson lasted six months and a load of grief.Basic Henry six years and going strong....The fact the bloke blasted the U.K for not encouraging innovation before moving his production out of the U.K didnt help!Before the haters start on me....look at how much he is selling his products for...then tell me he couldnt have made a decent living and run a few apprenticeships programs on his margins?
It's pure profit based,
I met him many years ago (in fact we sat at the same table and had dinner) in those days profit was nothing, invention everything.
A Dyson is no cheaper now than it was when they were built here, just the profit margin is greater.
Back in the day before they were so well known and accountants got so involved, he would never have entered the thought of building abroad.
Now the Chinese steal his ideas, R&D is still here, yet it's copied by all accounts as soon as they start building it in the Far East.
Should have kept it all here IMO
