Hi all, I'm on the look out for a good drill bit set but I'm not too sure which is best i.e HSS, Cobalt etc.

Alot of the work will just be general wood work but wouldn't mind a set which are ok for both wood and metal.

I've been looking on www.ffx.co.uk but just not sure what to go for.

Budget is about £40/50 for a good set.

Cheers!

If you want one set to sit in the drill box - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bosch-Multi-Construction-D... these would probably do

The key broke off in my Krooklock on one of my kit cars recently. Not having a decent drill bit for supposedly hardened metal at home I went to Aldi and bought two of ther universal grinding/drilling bits to see how these coped. Very well in fact I used two heavy duty drills Wolf and Bosch both mains powered and they did drill this out fairly easily. In stu in the car. Managed not to get any damage or mess to the steering wheel on which the device was locked and no sign of any forced removal. One bit was pretty well worn out but the other bit could continue in use.

Might be worth a try and the bits cost me £3.99 each from Aldi. Seemed a better way to solve the problem than using grinding gear or cutting gear in situ in the inetrior of the car to me. Even in a kit car! Worth a try?

Cobalt drill bits are better than HSS. Especially if you need to drill stainless steel.

These are very good for the wood jobs, i only tend to go for hss bits from the likes of dormer/presto or heller as they are all very good quality. Have not tried cobalt sets yet.

I would recommend these.

I used a 8mm then 13mm to drill 50 odd holes in some big rsj's. Admittedly I killed two 13mm bits (trying to drill 2.5mm galv aswell) but I only used 1 8mm bit and it was still going strong.

Cheers for the replies guys. Went and found that^ dewalt set for £50 delivered from their Ebay shop. Bargain!

Makes a change from buying/using 'powercraft' crap I have in the shed. I'm moving house in the next month or so and I've got loft eaves to insulate and board as well as boarding out the whole garage. These should do the job nicely.

Although that set will be more than fine for all round use, you really need a cobalt set when it comes to drilling hard metals.
