Suitable sealant for a patio?

I am looking to seal a blocked paved patio - I have read reviews about Thompsons (wet look) leaving white patches after only a few weeks that are almost impossible to remove. Can anyone recommend a good sealant? Water-based or solvent-based?

I am going to re-sand some of the joints too prior to sealing - is there a recommended way of doing this?
