Hi all - just trying to see what the average width of fellow PH'ers stairs are smile

Reason being, mine are 2 foot or 61cm and I thought that was fairly standard. Have spent the last week choosing a new bed and the depth of the divan base was 62cm! A fraction bigger than my stairs clearance - fortunately I discovered this problem before I bought the bed.

I did a google for minimum width of stairs and there doesn't appear to be one, just recommendations for new builds to be up to 80cm.
My house is approx 35 years old and I've lived in others a lot older that have less stair width than I have currently.

Hence, the query, what is the width of your stairs? smile

90cm/35.5 inches. This is ignoring the handrail so wall to wall, remove maybe 10cm for that but most things would fit above it.

Can't believe I just measured my stairs...

Are you sure that's right? With the mattress on top, many people would need a ladder to climb on!

The building regs for stair width was 800mm but it went out about 20 some years ago,

the british standard talks about getting a coffin up and down,

oh mine is 900mm but thats how I built it.

At 101cm wide it would seem my stair is quite wide, plenty room to pass slow moving traffic if necessary. Own design Spanish house. Will look at them in a whole new light now!

Yes - it was a Silentnight ottoman base divan.

I seem to have the smallest width stairs of anyone - I thought it was normal- guess I'm wrong.

There's loads of them as they make for all sorts of people but a quick Google shows they're typically 37cm for the base and 25cm for the mattress - total 62cm. Got a link to the specific one you're looking at?

If you look at the dimensions it says 62cm for height - and when I was in the store I asked what the height was and was told 2 foot.

It depends where you measured it, outside to outside width is typically 855, maybe up to 905, but not normally that big. Scotland is 915/955.

There is no set minimum size for stairs but 610mm is very narrow, normal width is around 800-900mm
