I have a carpet that doesent look worn but feels it, im wanting to get another year or so out if it.

Whats happened is where it gets walked on has gone flat and stiff whereas the other bits are lovely and raised and soft.

We have got a new hoover which has lifted it ever so slightly but im wondering, will a carpet cleaner be able to restore the pile or am i crutching at straws

Buy several bags of ice cubes. Tip them over the area that has gone flat. Rub them all in constantly for about 15 mins. Collect up what's left of the unmelted cubes, dry off excess water with a towel and hoover the damp area. Leave to dry. See if that helps.

(to see if it works on your carpet, use 1 ice cube on a small area to start with and see if you get any improvement)

"am i crutching at straws"

It's "clutching"...

"Grasping at straws" is also correct.

Wow, slight typo is the hype of the thread so far. Pistonheads at its best.

In answer to your question OP, a lot will depend on the quality of the carpet to start with, some just don't handle wear very well.

I've heard to use an ice cube to bring the carpet back where a chair has been sat on it, so I can see this working. Although would a wet carpet vac work the same?

Also interested in this, we have a man made carpets that has worn badly in the door way. Really poor, and are currently hiding it with a rug.

Be interested it see if there is a way of rejuvenating it.

I pull the pile up using a very stiff brush - might need to be done regularly though.

I seem to remember an episode of The league of Gentlemen, where they walked around the house with a wire brush type attachment on their feet to lift the pile.

You need a Proper Hoover

Or any older Hoover with the Activator brushroll, so Juniors from the 80's, Turbopowers and early bagged Purepowers.

Or a Kirby with the rug renovator, ebay will be your friend there.

A Rug doctor carpet cleaner rented form Homebase revived an ancient looking stair carpet at Mrs Spunagain's house before she sold it. Raised the pile and removal of dirt made the colour look much less faded.

A wet and dry vacuum cleaner such as a George is perfect for this, and will clean it too.
