Anybody that tunes Chainsaws etc? - theres an App for that!
Discussion
I've been tinkering with Chainsaws and other small 2 stroke equipment for a couple of years now and earn a few quid sharpening chains etc.
As far as setting the carbs for High Low and Idle speeds I started off, as one does, by tuning em by "ear" with fair success. But rather than wreck anybody's kit (especially on the flat out range) I started to use my Fluke DMM set on the Frequency range and by wrapping a probe wire around the HT lead. I can now set the idle and flat out RPM to manufactures spec accurately which is great.
Now I've wanted to buy a wireless tachometer for a while and yesterday I almost pressed the buy button on this little beauty.........

About £160 in the UK. There are cheaper versions but are not easy to source in the UK
Anyway I had an idea that maybe some geek has come up with an IPhone App! Lo and behold I found this....
https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/engine-rpm/id34040...
Now I'm not daft and got to thinking "snake oil" how can it possibly work? But for six quid I gave it a shot......
It's absolutely brilliant
Bit fiddly to start with but a thorough read of this manual it all becomes clear.....

Haven't tried it on a car engine yet but not really bothered as it does all I need.
Hope this helps anybody out there

Interesting - looking at the manual, I’d be a bit wary of using it to set H tune on a chainsaw. You need to be able to track RPM pretty accurately from (say) 3,000 to 14,000 RPM. It says “automatic mode only goes to 5K. Hint mode seems to expect you to set an initial target, so OK, I set 14K and then find out after the piston has melted that it was in fact >20K . Tracking mode seems to only handle gradual changes.
I’ll stick with my EDT-8 clone which cost about £20!
