Final Gas Bill... laughable estimate

So, I switched energy supplier at the end of June, and supplied a meter reading etc.
Over the previous ~9 months (including winter), using actual readings, an average of 6.73m3 per day used. Between the end of June and today, the average is 1.70m3 per day.
How, just how, does the supplier "estimate" for the final 15 days of their supply my usage has been 18.4m3 per day, a total of 276m3? Almost 3 times my actual usage for the last 58 days!!!
