Decent places/villages near Weybridge/Woking area to move to
Discussion
Been offered a job in Weybridge. Cannot afford to live in Weybridge - and don;t want to live in busy street in a pokey semi.
Coming from the north, going to have to downsize from my current 6 bedroom detached place, as something similar is 3x the price down there.
Only need 2-3 bedrooms. Want a detached or semi-detached cottage or similar in a quiet village with a lovely local pub, within 5 miles of a train station and within 10 miles of Weybridge.
Will rent for first year or so to get a feel for the area - and see if I gel with the role.
Where should I be looking, Surrey gurus. £2k/mo rent max. Purchase max £600k as ballparks.
The bit between the M3 and the A3 looks about right. Wouldn't want to be further south than Guildford, further west than Ascot.

Might be worth a look around Ripley/ Pyrford area, relatively easy commute to Brooklands although the Byfleet road from both directions can be a bit of a crawl in the mornings
Or if you go a bit further out there's some nice spots around the Send/ Burntcommon area.
Neither are fantastic for stations mind, but doable.
South of the M25 the prices drop a bit and then rise again once you get to Guildford
Dont right off Woking area completely. Theres a lot of "new town" type stuff but some decent 'old town" spots as well. All significantly cheaper than anything with a Weybridge postcode.

and why is there a Cobham AND a Chobham?? Very confusing!)
Yes, can be confusing. You might afford a house near Chobham, but I think Cobham might be out of your reach.
Have a look out toward Addlestone or Woking. Not far from Weybridge.
Department of Sweeping Generalisations.
Southerners are used to having a longer journey time to work than Northerners.
As above, Addlestone. Big regeneration of the high street happening, even getting a Waitrose - supposedly means it will be posh. But there's still the bloody great tower block of councilists. Has a train station with a rubbish service, but only one stop to Weybridge.
Byfleet and New Haw are surprisingly cheap compared to Weybridge even though its next door. Again one stop on the train. Or West Byfleet - already has the Waitrose. Less expensive than Weybridge but more expensive than Byfleet. Check all of the above as to how close a house is to the M25 as it can get really noisy. Decent parts of Woking will be less than Weybridge - two stops on the train. Large parts of Woking I would avoid.

I'm in Pyrford. I commute into London from West Byfleet station.
Pyrford is great in my opinion, it's rural but still not far from good amenities. It has a very nice village feel to it, if you like that kind of thing.
It has an Ofsted outstanding primary school, a few good village shops (including an awesome butcher).

As you say - it will be a massive change from my quiet, leafy current place in Weetwood to the sarf. I expect village life will be fine for me - as long as not too far from a station or 10-15 miles from Weybridge.

Speak slowly and carefully and try to sound like The Queen. They might understand you.
If they don't understand, repeat what you have just said, but slower and louder and try to get closer to their face.

Addlestone and Byfleet & New Haw is most made up of chavs and 4.13keys though.Byfleet and New Haw are surprisingly cheap compared to Weybridge even though its next door. Again one stop on the train.
