Just moved house and it needs fully redecorating/refurbishing. It's a lovely place, triple garage, acre of garden, generously sized rooms etc. but it's a bit old fashioned inside, probably not been updated since it was built in the early '90s. As a result every ceiling has artex stipple finish, which I hate and will go! And every room has dado rails and I mean every blooming room, upstairs and down! Personally I think they visually lower the ceiling height so I'm thinking of getting rid of them all but it will mean a big filling job on the walls! So, what's the P'Heads opinion on dado rails? wink

Hadn't even reached you saying "probably not been updated since it was built in the early '90s" and I was thinking '90s! You know what needs to be done!

Nowt wrong with a bit of dado.

Just make sure to have the lower walls rag rolled and the kitchen ceiling clad with T&G pine planks.
And a bit of Anaglypta here and there.

I didn't know what that was so I googled it. Actually looks quite nice with a dado!

That's Lincrusta, not Anaglypta wink

Whole different kettle of fish.
And it looks great on a period property.
But not the period '1990 - 2017' under a dado rail...

Artex gotta go.

Personally I like dado rails! Paint a slightly darker shade below.

I remember about a decade ago encountering an elderly lady in my old line of work who wanted her new apartment decorated.

The spec was dado rails in every room with light wallpaper on the top half and dark at the bottom. This was about 2006 or 2007.

When the work finished it was like being transported back to 1996 but she was over the moon so that's all that mattered rofl

hehe I only opened this thread to post that image, but I see I've been beaten to it. I remember it from birthday cards years ago.

In the right house, they're great. But that needs to be a period property, not 1990s wink

'visually lowering the ceiling height' makes me think picture rail not dado rail.

I like dado rails in the right place and if the decor is sympathetic. I fitted satin white ones in my hallway recently with a nice Cole & Porter wallpaper above and below.

But as for artex, yes, horrible, skim over it.

I think a white dado rail, white skirting and grey walls would look quite nice.

Then again I think it would look better without..

Pain to get rid of it all but then if you're doing lots of other work anyway it's neither here nor there.
