We had one about 10 years ago. The novelty soon wears off and then the maintenance becomes a chore. I imagine they would be ruinous to run with current energy prices too.

I only clicked on this thread to write "sex pond". When I saw it had already been written in the OP I was very disappointed. So how about this:

Go for it OP! Hot tubs are a sign of "making it" and should be purchased post-haste.

All the better if you get one with a removable lining. Acts like a massive condom for all the sex effluence. It will be needed. After all the sex. In your pond.

I got one about 4 yrs ago for the taking away, it must have been about 6 yrs old at the time. I got a company in to fix it and have used it ever since, i dont use it in winter, and becaue it was free and owes me nothing i dont worry too much about running costs. Its never broken or caused any grief. I dont stress about maintenance, and change the water every couple of months and add some cleaner stuff weekly and power wash the filters every time i chage the water. We have it after a shower in the evenings with a glass of wine and then shower again after. We avoid letting the kids in it until just before its due a water change. When it does die i doubt i will replace it, but whilst it works we love it. If i had paid thousands for it and was ocd about chemical levels and stuff i wouldn't use it. I have a friend who spent a about £10 k on one and he seems to be so stressed its functioning properly i think the stress it causes him, far out Weighs any benefit.

We've had ours about 3 years now and still love going in it. We pretty much only use it in the winter. Its not the same in the summer. This summer we're going to turn the temp down to about 20'c as the cost of electric is sending the bill sky high. Maintenance can be a little bit of a chore but no more than anything else really. The more expensive/newer ones will add chemicals automatically so even easier.

I recently attended a friends Stag in some large country house. About 20 men and a stripper were kicking about for two days. I'm pretty sure I'm never gettting in a hot tub again. The temp was immediately cranked up to max where it stayed uncovered for 2 days so must have wasted insane amounts of energy. Drinks food and drugs were spilt constantly into this thing and at one point on the first night I actually passed out and had to be dragged out of this disgusting tray of hot sweaty chemical soup. After 24 hours it had gone from an idyllic crystal clear and inviting dip. Into a hot, steaming, cloudy and polluted bog. The floor was littered with pint glasses and bottles and the surface had food, spit and grease forming a crust. Even this didn't seem to put us off. Looking back we're lucky nobody drowned or died from botchalism or something.
Obviously these memories have kind of stained my views on hot tubs. I will no longer look forward to hopping into a hot tub with my wife in any rented accommodation anywhere, ever again. Which is probably a shame.

Surely they aren't really suitable as a sex pond with all the nasty chemicals in the water getting up inside?

My wife bought one, she is in it right now. Has it at 39 degrees. I suspect it costs about £2 a day in running costs. I use Aquafiness, just dose once a week. I couldn't be arsed with looking at ph levels. It is ok, we have it away from the house so we can't be bothered by the kids.

I don't use it very much I find I get too hot.

I don't have one yet, but it's on my wish list for my next house. I've used them on holiday where they've been private to our accommodation and kept very very clean, and I love it. Helps my back and other joint and muscle pain like nothing else except medication.

I have a hot tub and a sauna. It helps my bad back lots. A nice way to unwind with a bottle of bubbly. The kids love it too. I have never thought about running costs as bought it just after moving in.

A hot tubs a crap place to have sex. It's also pretty dangerous, if you are in your mid forties plus it's likely that an hour in a tub will send your blood pressure through the roof.

I've got one that was bought second hand for £1500 and costs us about £50 a month in energy so not ruinously expensive by any means.

Yeah, I've had the odd jibe on the tires old "chav bath" or "sex pond" lines but as with anything in life I didn't get it for what other people think, I got it because I wanted one and it's a nice thing to have when I fancy getting in it.

It's great in the winter when it's cold and dark outside then throughout the warmer months it gets turned down to 37 or 38 degrees and is a very nice place to be after a run or a long bike ride.

My dad's one has a very forceful massage feature, applied by multiple moving water jets going up and down your back and shoulders. I tried it when he first got it, and it was amazing.

Then I heard the "s p" phrase... given how taken he is with his new lady friend, I'm reluctant to ever go back in the thing again!

We're off there tomorrow as it happens... my kids are desperate to have a go in it... this makes me uncomfortable.

We bought one last summer after spending a week in a holiday rental with a tub. Nice to sit in of a night with a bit of music, something to drink and the lights slowly changing colour. Nice way to unwind and great if you suffer from bad back and stuff.
Not the best place to get jiggy as water does not make a great lubricant but, if you're both in the mood, certainly a great place to get things started.

We have had ours (a good quality Hotsprings one) for about 10 years. I thought it might be a bit of a white elephant but definitely not. Tend to use it (and outdoor sauna) mainly late evening and far more in winter but probably averages 3-4 nights per week over the year. Great place to watch the stars from. Obviously helps living out in the countryside in the middle of nowhere.
