We have been talking about moving to France for about three years now.

It was actually my idea to start with and I am still looking forward to it. We will be able to buy without mortgage, have enough money left over for investment to live on.

On the other hand we could stay here and carry on working with all the stresses involved, she hates her job, I run a roofing company. The only upside is that we have a house here that we both love, but we can buy better. I've done a lot of work on this house and it has paid off.
I could possibly still run the business remotely.

I think my fear is if we don't like it for whatever reason we could never attain back here what we have now.
I've been feeling really weird since the house has been valued and we could be gone in a matter of months.

Anybody else had jitters like this?

Yep

We are selling up a house we love to retire elsewhere. Tricky ain't it?

Very, didn't expect these emotions. She is fine, it's just me.

We've been together 25 years, but always lived at least 100 miles apart...so we're heading for extra pressures too!

Wow, that takes some doing. smile Understand your fears. That is a minor fear of mine, we have only ever seen each other for a few hours a day, both working.
I have to go for it, I'd regret my cowardice forever if I didn't.

Give it a year or two, you'll be wondering why you didn't do it sooner - and wondering how you could ever have put up with the st for so long.

Yes, this. If I missed the st that is work there must be something wrong with me. I think I've got some sort of Stockholm Syndrome.

How old are you?
How much is enough?
Taken into account inflation?

Just curious because I'm seriously thinking of doing this myself but to SE Asia.

Moving out of our house of 25 years this week.

Spent last month getting rid of everything. Loft is empty, most furniture sold and got the car in the double garage for the first time since we moved in.

It's been quite liberating. We've all got too much stuff that needs storing, maintaining and insuring.

Moving on and trying something new; what's the worst that can happen?

I'm 54
Should come out with up to £200k to spare
I don't intend to do nothing. I can still earn if I wanted to.
I have also thought about selling business if anybody wanted it.

£200k investment to provide enough to live on?

1) please send me details of the investment so I can get some
2) or please send me your monthly budget so I can work out how to live on £250 a month.

If you're only getting 1.5%, you're doing it wrong.

Barring the bills, that's not far what we live on now. smile. I'd be investing at a higher return than that. We intend to grow mist if our veg etc.
If you just spent it...it would be £10k a year for 20 years. I'd be knocking on 75.

Thread-merge with the "feel wealthy" thread round about now...? The "£17k/mo isn't enough" section, particularly...

I assume most people would hope for a stock-based investment to manage around 5% these days.....but even that carries risk....my negative outlook kind of expects a bit of a global correction sometime soon.

Where in France? And is at least one of you fluent? & do either of you have friends over there or know some French people?
Without those I can imagine it being a little on the lonely side, unless you are expert at integrating into another community.

I imagine things could get interesting over the next couple of years, but it sound a fine adventure!!

Charente, Gironde or Midi-Pyrénnés

My French is fairly good. I have been learning intensively for 3 years. An average of two hours a day. By no means fluent.

We generally keep to ourselves here but I won't have a problem trying to 'mix in'.

Don't know anybody there.

I think I'd want to rent for 6 months, just to work what's what while looking for somewhere to buy.

Possibly but whether you rent or buy in France this situation is crying out for the house in England to be rented out for a year to leave your options open.
