I've just bought an old mobility scooter...a Pride Legend XL8. I'm glad to say it's not for me...I'm going to use some of the running gear as the basis of a Toylander, a really cool kid's Land Rover.

The scooter was untested, dead, and would not even push along as the motor brake thingy was seized solid. I've freed that off (and removed it from the motor end) and it pushes now. I've messed around with the wiring and now have a bit more life, however I wonder if something is wrong with the speed controller (EGIS PG Drives Technology).

On the output plug socket on the speed controller, there's a red and black which go to the motor itself, and two smaller whites, which go down to the motor brake. As soon as the batteries are connected, I get 20V across the whites, but nothing across the black/red so there's no life from the motor itself. I know the motor works though, as connecting it directly to the battery makes it run. The control panel is working AFAIK, horn, lights, battery meter all work, and when you pull the throttle you get a blinking green light.

Does anyone know if there's a way to test the speed controller...I don't know if it's a fried controller, or just something up on the controls. like a knackered wigwam (the potentiometer).

Any help gratefully received...however I am an electrical numpty so keep it simple!!!

Here goes!

If you have freed the brake 'disc' (it's an electro-magnetic brake, when power goes to it the magnet frees the brake) then put the brake back on the motor.

If there is a lever on the brake then move it up or down -should be obvious which way it will move - it's a freewheel lever. It manually release the brake enabling you to push the scooter.

Is there a micro switch on the brake? From memory I think there will be.

When you move the freewheel lever into freewheel the micro switch will 'tell' the controller (the P&G box) that it's in freewheel so you will get the flashing light.

If you still get a flashing light when you don't have it in freewheel then there is another problem, the number of times the light flashes is a code to the problem.

The only way to test the controller is with a P&G diagnostic box, you might be lucky and find a local mobility shop that has one but as they are expensive few do.

If you want you can email me and I'll give you my phone number and try to help more.

Brilliant...thanks! I've fiddled around with it and we have motion from the motor!

TBH I think the brake assembly is shot, so I might look out for a replacement one anyway. And also the motor runs faster pulling the reverse throttle paddle than it does pulling the forward one, but I suspect this will just be a duff wig wag or a wire on wrong somewhere.

But thanks again for your help...very useful!!

Stop fiddling about you could do a lot of damage to the P&G unit and they are not cheap to sort out!

Send me a email and I'll give you my phone number.

I have 10+ years dealing with mobility scooter.
