My neighbour has commented that she gets noise entering from some of her windows & has asked what can be done. She had them replaced about 7 years ago but I've no idea how long there has been a problem. The issue is at the hinge side of the window where it seems the window isn't being pulled tight enough onto the frame to compress the gasket (in places you can slip a piece of paper in & it isn't held). The handle end is OK as it's pulled tight by the locking mechanism.

This is what the hinge looks like:

I can't see any way of adjusting it so can anyone advise if it can be done & if so how?

3 things to check.

Is there play in the hinge?
Have the rubber seals failed?
Has the plastic end piece worn?

With the window open is there any slack or give if you hold the window and try to rock it (like you would with a wheel to check for play)? Hinges available online or at screwfix.

The rubber seals are cheap and easy to replace - its just a matter of finding the correct profile.

In the corner of the window frame and the end of the window there are shaped plastic thingies. As the window closes these work to pull the window against the frame.

Probably a combination of all 3. I'd replace the hinges - they come is standard sizes you need the length and the thickness.

Thanks for the reply. The hinges feel OK so I'm going to try replacing the seals on one window to see if that solves the noise problem.

A pic of it closed would help identify the problem, I would hazard a guess to say it will be the plastic ends of the hinge these are designed to pull the edge in tight as you close the window

Easiest way is to fit some locking wedges to the hinge side frame so that it pulls the window in more when closing.

They can be had on eBay for peanuts.

You need some SAC bolts, these will pull in the hinge side to restore good seal compression
