I have a leaking pressure valve on an unvented hot water cylinder.

As soon as I noticed a small drip I rang a plumber who came the next evening to look. He said he'd price it up and get back to me - but it will "probably" be the following week when he could sort it.

15 days down the line and I haven't heard a word and the water from the valve is now running like a tap. I called 2 days ago and left a voicemail but he hasn't returned my call.

I appreciate it's the busiest time of year for plumbers and he's probably stacked out, but should I wait out of courtesy, call him again although I don't want to bug him, or call a different plumber?

What would you do or how long would you wait?

Probably decided he doesn't like the look of the job and can fill his time with other easier jobs.

Move on to someone else... Have a look at local 'property maintenance' firms, we've started using one for odd jobs at the office, they're a bit more expensive but seem far more reliable than one man bands.

Good reliable plumbers are hard to find!

I'm a pretty laid back person, but even I wouldn't wait that long for some sort of response. Bin them and find someone else.

If its not too advanced plumbing try a local handyman service/property service as above

I found one through checkatrade.com , he does good work, charges quite a bit, but you get what you pay for

Maybe look at bigger local plumbing companies, they might be pricey but at least have the resources to be quicker

I wouldn't wait as I am a plumber wink

I work for a big company, we're always busy this time of the year, and this chap is probably the same.

A call to say he's too busy wouldn't go a miss though, basic customer service that is smile

We are in the same situation, unreliable tradesmen really get on my tits. My OH got up early and sat in two Saturday AMs in a row for the plumber who was going to "just pop back in" to fix a noisy valve for us, having come to do the boiler service on the second date he arranged.

Numerous texts and voicemails have remained unanswered.

Cheeky sod has now sent us the bill for the boiler service without finishing the job.

Does he genuinely think we are going to pay?

Try actuating the valve a few times, fixed mine smile

If not these people sell the spares :-

https://www.unventedcomponentseurope.com/

(& are very good to boot).

Yes you are not supposed to fit these yourselves but it's really not hard. You are replacing a part like for like so no harder than fitting a tap. The plumbers will come on screaming it's not allowed & you should have a G3 ticket etc etc. Ask them what they would do that is different to you?

Plumbers in my experience are the worst trade to deal with ever (as in fking useless).

You're not likely to get anyone out this side of Xmas so maybe a helpful plumber of here can clarify. I've fitted a few myself and the UK ones are pretty bomb/fool proof.

The European ones I've looked at not quite up to the same standards in terms of safety features and you can DIY those. So setting aside a rather blasé approach to health and safety the French and Spanish can't all be wrong wink

ISTR the regulation of fitters in the UK came about because of muppets feeding conventional copper cylinders with mains pressure which did lead to several explosions and deaths.

Yet plenty of us still go out of our way offer free advice and help complete strangers on the Internet, despite regular comments like this.

OP, find another Plumber, he isn't getting back to you. Where are you based?

Eta: Never mind, nowhere near me.

Yep. He's not really seeing things from a customer's POV.

Lots of people seem to forget that being a decent tradesman and running all of the different parts of a self employed business are two very different skillsets.

Some people are excellent at one side, but poor at the other. eg epic electrician / plumber but gash at customer service / invoicing / quoting etc.
Striking the balance can be hard.

You could cap it off to stop it leaking and see what happens.

No don’t do this.
This is why you need a ticket to work on them.

Get another plumber. Tell them which part the other guy was going to fit so the can turn up with it.

Just had the same.

We have a gas condensing boiler leaking water, called our usual chap that does the annual service & he popped up the same day turned it off, drained down & diagnosed that a number of bits & bobs needs replacing ( at a cost of appprox a grand including fitting)

He said he’d order the bits & fit a couple of days later. 10 days on (with no heating) he’s no replying texts or calls/ messages, so I get a bigger firm in & 24 hours later & a new pipe fitted, it’s up & running less than an hour after the new chap turned up. Cost? A hundred & a bit quid.

Still no communication from the other guy.

So op, move on & get someone else in.

Had to chase the CH fitters who did my daughter's house for a month to get them to send an invoice and that was for 4 grand.

So yet another ass hole. Just like the local bloke to me who said it could this that and the other(of course costing £££££££). Following advice on here and elsewhere along with common sense had it fixed for £16. Sorry plumbers. I know you aren't all the same. I'm just yet to find one that isn't useless. Along with my builder and just about..no I lie..along with everyone else I know! Perhaps it's just here....

Who suggested capping it off apart from you?
