Not sure where to post this for maximum coverage.

I am with Scottish Power on a dual-fuel contract due to end soon.

Browsing their latest fixed price deals, I notice the standing charge has increased by £40 per year for each fuel, so a sneaky hike of £80!

Anyone else spotted this with the other energy companies?

I have asked them how they justify this increase and got a few incoherent lines of utter tripe from customer services.

Am awaiting call from their complaints people.

Why complain about their pricing? If you don't like the deal they offering, find someone else who offers a better deal!

Thanks, Great idea. I'd never have thought of that.

My query is if all the energy companies are at it as a response the the "price-cap".

My Scottish Power fixed rate ended in Jan. Similar price hike, so I joined Together Energy for about the same as the old SP rate. Seem OK, except no app & their website etc looks like build by a 12 year old. Cheap for a reason i guess! I can live with amateur interface to save £50+ a month..

Their website hasn't worked since the begining of the year. Can't report meter readings, can't access bills, can't access account balance, but as you say dead cheap ....

Why not try one of the comparison sites, and find out?

Does it matter how the price is built up? Find the lowest price for your requirements from a company whose approach and service you can work with.

yes Who cares whether it's made up by a standing charge or per-unit cost. Work out how much energy you use then let the comparison sites tell you who is cheapest.

Personally, despite them being slightly more expensive, I want for a company which doesn't have "introductory deals" so I hopefully won't have to faff about changing provider every twelve months.

Whilst I understand the sentiment, I don't think the market works like that. There is no loyalty factor in the energy companies pricing models and so we just need to play the same game and switch at the end of each contract, or sooner if there is no exit fee. I got fed up of Scottish Power offering a 'better' deal only after I had begun the switching process and so left them 1 year ago. Their billing process was rubbish also, riddled with errors. I moved to Iresa and they are fairly rubbish also, insufficient staff to respond to queries promptly. I'm now about to switch again to Outfoxthemarket, purely on price again. So long as these energy sites allow me to place meter readings online and can generate a monthly bill that I can check, I don't see any other reason to not buy on price.

Very good sensible point, the power of the internet can be and should be used exactly as such.

I've just been through this with Marks and Sparks Energy, actually a branding of SSE. They doubled my monthly direct debit for electricity last week to £100 a month, without any notification, despite all the guff about sending out emails.

I took the time to spreadsheet all their tarrifs and standing charges, and found that the 'fixed price' contracts come to the same amount per annum as the basic tarrifs. It all stinks of cartels, and bamboozling customers with ever more complex tarrifs.

Anyway, for what it's worth, Octopus energy came out cheapest according to the spreadsheets, so I switched to them. (Other providers may be cheaper.)

Ah, Scottish Power. The absolute definition of a joke company there is.

Currently with them, my rate is fixed until June. Due to a f**k up on their end when I gave the meter readings initially they said I'd pay them £21 a month. Brilliant. I give my meter reading a few months in, it shoots up to £48 a month and I'm £300 in debt to them. Managed to use 4,500 units of Gas during the summer apparently!

I complained, they gave me £50 compensation. Except, while I did get the £50 in to my account, I ended up owing them £50 more. They added the compo to the debt I had with them.

Avoid like the plague carrying roses.

I recently changed to a newish company, bulb.co.uk which thus far seems ok (and cheaper). The switchover was painless.

Here's a referrer link for anyone who's interested, £50 off - https://bulb.co.uk/refer/christopher4202

My fixed deal with scottish power came to an end last month. Logged into my account let it search for the best deal - comes out more expensive than current deal by quite some margin.
So next onto uswitch, put my details in - 2nd best deal after some unknown new provider is....wait for it....yep, scottish power and it’s only slightly more than my current expiring deal.
Back onto SP website to double check, nope it’s not on there.
Called them up quering why this deal didn’t appear on thier own ‘find me the best deal’ section of my account - said the deal is exclusive to uswitch and all I had to do is ‘switch’ to my existing supplier via uswitch to get the new deal - which I did and all is well.

So why are they making deals available to existing customers only available via uswitch not via their own web site or via their own call centre?
Must be some sort of scheme where they want to bump themselves up some sort of rating system inside uswitch?

Companies pay comparison websites like USwitch to be at the top in search results. You notice it when trying to get car insurance for a few cars, consistently one provider will come out cheapest one month for all the cars. Next month though the provider will be different.

That's why you should take the results of comparison websites with a 10lb bag of salt.

Would never go back to Scottish Power as it took ages to get them to refund my credit when we moved suppliers, apparently they hope people don't bother and make it difficult to move.

I'm now with Bulb and will probably stay with them for a while, it's a variable rate but no one has got near them on our usage which is pretty average.

Anyone interested in moving to Bulb and getting a £50 credit can use this link.
