House Sale Dilemma
Discussion
Hi......I lined up an estate agent in the middle of March to sell my house, paid marketing fees, home report etc. What with Easter holidays, some general DIY etc...we're just in a position to put on the market now. Expect it to be listed within the next 10 days or so.
In the meantime, its has emerged that my neighbour has terminal cancer. His wife is not really in a position to live on her own in their house due to her own health issues, There have been signs of them preparing to sell also - although I'm guessing here. These are two houses out of 4 in a converted farmhouse / barns / stables arrangement.
I don't want to be an a
hole neighbour by making my neighbours life even more difficult than it already is by potentially going to market at almost exactly the same time. Having said that I have my own family reasons for wanting to move - although nothing as drastic as my neighbour however. Do I hold off and let things play out for my neighbour or do I just push ahead with my plans? Ridiculously this has kept me up half the night!

Neither could sell for all you know.
Its prime time of the year to market a property so I would get it on asap.
Personally if your spouse was in the final stages of life moving house would be the last thing you would plan to do.
It would be something for several months after, IMHO.

Breeks, I take my hat off to you for being a thoroughly decent person.
My view is it would be asking a lot of anyone not to move house when they want to, and you shouldn’t ask it of yourself. There’s not even a guarantee that you both selling would be a problem, since as you say, the houses aren’t identical. After all, houses on new estates all come up at once and sell ok.
My own view is that you should go ahead, but drop a note/have a chat with your neighbour so she understands and knows your plans. She may well decide to hold off, or price differently, you don’t know. The decent thing to do though is to keep the lines of communication open. To my mind, that would be supportive without requiring the excessive generosity of not selling at all.

Same thing happened to identical house over the road from us (ours is on the market currently) but as far as I am told it will take a fair amount of time to go through probate etc.
In my opinion, moving and or selling is not something you do lightly and is almost certainly necessary for your situation / time scale so do what you need to do.
