They're also great if you know your mate has them, because then you can ring the doorbell and he can look at his phone to see a fish-eye lens view of your arse cheeks...

Yes I'd like to know that, does he need to ring it for the video to start recording or does it sense motion? Also what's going on in the background?

Some of them are motion detection yes, and you can set the distance at which you want them to be "active" so that you don't just record everyone walking on the pavement, for example

Iit picked up his motion,

on the video you can even hear him burp,
his mate says try the patio round the back

its a doorbell as well of course but it also comes on with movement,
i really cannot recommend these highly enough

video is around 30 seconds he tries the neighbors as well.
then walks off,

You can easily share the whole clip, without giving away who you are etc.

Ring have hours of videos like that on YouTube where people try to steal deliveries or break in and the owner talks to them through the doorbell and they run off etc. hehe

I was a big fan of this (very big fan, thought it was the best since sliced bread and said so) and slowly the issues crept up and I have now returned mine. After a few months spent more time fixing issues then Amazon went and bought them and Home Kit never seemed to arrive etc.

Video door bells, great idea. How they fit in with the new data stuff is another thing but I am waiting for a more solid entry that is not flakey after some time.

People definitely have very different experiences depending on a multitude of factors.

I’ve got a ring2 hardwired and the video recordings used to be a bit dodgy sometimes with it freezing and unpausing half a second later etc. Recent firmware updates have made mine much better though.

I read on Reddit that others have gone the other way,

I got mine just because I read about them on here and thought it might be a laugh, so far I’ve been very impressed with it and I’ve seen random animals setting it off at night. It’s basically just a normal doorbell that records things passing it if you want. I never answer it remotely but you obviously can if you need to.

I’ve got no real use for it but it’s just another gadget that makes some things a bit more fun.

Careful who you buy from though - got mine from some 'living smart' or something like that concern who think they're exempt from consumer protection regs - damn thing didn't work, credit card want a " letterheaded indpendant confirmation" that it was faulty, I had to make about 40 phonecalls before I found a firm willing to undertake said act.

"Sorry mate we only do washing machines etc" "yeah but you're qualified in electronics, I'm only asking for confirmation it doesn't work" "yeah but I'm not qualified in doorbell" etc etc etc

I think I'd be getting a big angry dog... very cool that you can see what happened after the fact, I'm sure if he's a known thief the cops will be able to ring HIS doorbell and show him the footage, even if there was no actual attempt to break in.

You can also talk through it.

No need for a dog - just a "Can I help you - before I send the video of you and your chum to the police".

I’ve got a couple of their products and really rate them. I got a Floodlight cam first which covers my driveway and front door and then saw their Doorbell was reduced in Argos so bought one of those too. Great piece of kit, if a little slow to load up at times.
