I need to buy a new vacuum cleaner for the old dear. She's currently got one of those Dyson ball thingies but it's getting on and lost a lot of suction power (and its just a st design). Ideally i'd like to get her something small and light that sucks like a we, so I was thinking of getting one of those Dyson cordless ones but not sure if they're up to scratch. Has anyone got one and would they recommend it? Are cordless vacs any good these days? Are there any other recommendations for something lightweight and actually decent?

Thanks!

The V8 cordless is great

It's not worth £500 but no vacuum is.

Someone on here worked for Dyson and very kindly gave me a 50% voucher code.

Its worth £250

Bought a Sebo about 12 years ago, its been awesome, only issues was the flex freyed inside the handle, trimmed it back and refitted and been fine since, they use them in hotels so they must be pretty hardy, Miele stuff is good as well.

Dysons seem like overpriced normal stuff rather than proper quality, amazes me how many I see when I drop stuff at the tip.

Dyson (like all cleaners) have to be maintained - Has it had filters cleaned? Is there an obstruction? Our ball one is great, but got a bit cranky when it had sucked up a pencil which lodged in it and stopped the hose bit retracting. Soon cleared though!

I have one (V6 I think) and it works fine for me. My house is mostly hardwood flooring which makes things a lot easier, but the small bit of carpet it seems to cope well.

Main issue is the battery life.. I have to work like a madman to do the whole house on one charge. We have a dog, so its not exactly an easy life for it either.

Miele, you can usually get them slightly cheaper off Amazon Warehouse.

Same, it's been great and I can't fault mine.

Trouble with the latest Dysons is that , apart from the filters, they are not designed to be cleaned. The brush housing is full of nooks and crannies that collect muck which eventually reduce the suction. You can't take them apart without breaking something. The same goes for the collection box. You can remove the clear plastic bin but the innards are not accessible. As said the internal plastic hoses clog easily. A pencil tore a hole in one of mine. Was not easy to fix. User error yes, but not good enough for an expensive item that should have been designed to be more robust. Can't say if other makes are any better as I have no experience other than Dyson.

+1

Sturdy and work very well for their size. I've had the cat and dog one (don't have pets - it was a good deal at the time and has a HEPA filter) and it's never failed to do a good job - even mud and grit from car mats etc.

Not convinced by bagless vacuums - you don't have a bag but just risk getting covered in crap every time you enter it.

Just what exactly do you do to your vacuum?

:grumble: if you do get a Miele and have a cleaner, make sure they change the filters and bags before it gets to the point of a thermal shut off :grumble:

As above, et the clone (cheap) bags and filters off Amazon.

And see if you can get the more powerful "cat and dog" one somewhere that has old stock. Ours is 2200w, I think the new ones are 1600w.

Literally lifts the carpet on max power.

Edit: Just looked, seems the new one is 900w!! dunno if that is comparable to mine so maybe not a recommendation!

I'm a happy dyson v8 user. Mixture of hard floor but mostly new carpet and it works brilliantly.

I did get it in the sale at Christmas and I wouldn't paid £500 but £300 I'm more than happy.

I have been a student with Henry, I've had a Miele when renting a posh flat in Edinburgh and now back down south in a house I have such a handy wireless vacum I couldn't think of using a plug again

ISTR all vacuums were limited to under 1000W (Any manufactured after Sept 2017?) for environmental reasons! Just take 3 times as long doing the job and using more electric?
