Seriously how hard is it to diplay your house name at the front of your house or on your gate?

Yet again i Just spent 30 mins driving around trying to find someone in the sticks, and half the houses have no house sign.
This person was desperate a few hours ago for me to come out and solve their tripped electrics, however i just gave up, especially as their phone just goes to voice mail.

I am seriously thinking of stopping call outs to these types of places, as it takes longer to find them than than it does to solve the issue.
Especially if its dark as well.

JUST PUT A fkING HOUSE NAME SIGN ON YOUR fkING HOUSE, I AM NOT fkING PSYCHIC.

Maybe they fixed the electrical problem themselves. They weren't able to let you know because their phone battery had died (having had no power in the house to charge it), and they were embarrassed about you coming all the way out there for an unnecessary job, so they hid their house sign.

Did all the other houses have their names on display?

The thing is - out in the sticks, everyone pretty much knows everyone else, so all you had to do was call at ANY house in the approximate vicinity and they would probably have known the people you were looking for

Or end up at the business end of a Cornwall farmer's shotgun as he shouts "ged orf my land".

I agree OP, it is so annoying. I know this from personal experience of trying to find houses that I'm supposed to survey, especially if the houses are set back with no name on the gate on the road! Also irritating as a lot of the stuff we do is in the sticks so the address is "something house, something village, something post town, Postcode (which covers half the village)

I have two name plates on my house and sat nav puts the post code right outside.

Tesco, sainsbury's, Dpd and Amazon still can't find it.

Why don't people check thread titles before they post them.

My house doesn’t have a name sign, because I would never be so pretentious as to give it a name, it has a blue metal plate, with the number of the house in white letters, the kind you see on virtually every house in France.
I had a winter seasonal job years ago, driving an oil tanker for Charringtons, a company in East London, it was an evening start, around 18.00, and the deliveries were to big homes in the Kent and Surrey countryside.
They all had grandiose names, like Tara, The Larches, Tall Trees, Davan, (presumably Dave and Anne), but they had one thing in common, the names would be on fingerposts, hidden in shrubbery, and impossible to see in the dark, unless you got out at every driveway with a torch.
Sometimes I’d go out of the depot with 7,500 litres of central heating oil, and get back at midnight, still with 7000 litres in the tank, undelivered.

Agree 100%
It should be law that EVERY house has a name or number visible from the road

It pissed me off no end when i had to go and pick up a client, i guess it must be more frustrating for the emergency guys

I feel your pain.

I spent a many sixth form and university holidays delivering things for my father's business, and finding properties in the countryside is a fking joke.

It should be the law that every property clearly displays the house name or number where the property/driveway meets the public highway.

But worse than the above, by a long way, is those fking dheads that live on a housing estate or development, and remove their house number and give the house a name beucase for some unknown reason they think they are too posh for a house number.

Leave the fking number on your house you fking Peasant! You live on a housing estate!

You can literally waste 45 minutes driving round a large housing estate looking for the one house out of hundreds that has a name instead of a number.

I used to just give up after 10 mins and phone them later to say I couldn't find their house and they had to come and pick it up from our warehouse. I would also make some sort of sly remark about the fact they had removed the house number just to make sure they knew that their piss-poor attempt to be posh had caused them hassle and expense.

This was on the wall when I bought the house eight years ago.

Happy now?

It's totally fine as long as the house didn't previously have a number, and you also have an additional house name plate where your property meets the highway (if that one can't be read from the road)

We have a number and a name (according to LRO) Name is inappropriate so we don't use it.

BTW Is there somewhere to register names and stuff, the previous owners has a different house name (some sort of family heirloom) that moves with them (we don't use that either)

This is what I don't understand. An ordinary person like me wants:

His taxi to arrive as quickly as possible.

His pizza to arrive as quickly as possible.

Guests to be able to find the house as easily as possible.

Mail to be delivered correctly.

Parcels and other deliveries to safely reach my home as easily and as quickly as possible.

Therefore, I make the name of my house as clear, and as visible as possible, to all the above.

Why wouldn't you want your house name/number to have maximum visibility?

My road is all house names

Probably 1in 5 has an adequate sign

If I’m expecting a delivery I wheel our wheelie bin out as well as it has the name on it as well

Always see vans and taxis crawling along looking for an address

Not so bad in the summer, but in the winter it must suck

I guess roads like mine are not so popoluar with multi drop drivers

Proper time critical emergency, single manned fast response car and you’ve got a house name but no number and no/ tiny sign.

Daily pain in the arse, as soon as the sat nav isn’t 100% accurate I’m out and walking looking for that cute little hand carved sign with the name on it!

There's a LOT of snobbery in this. Many moons ago I worked in a call centre taking orders where you'd look up the postcode on the system. It would show numbers 1, 2, 3 etc and you'd ask what number they were and they'd say "oh we just use Dunroamin". OK, but which number? They'd get quite shirty.

Or the ones who live in flats but want to hide it. They'll never let on there's a flat number until you ask, and even then many say "oh the building number's fine".

Well don't complain when your package doesn't arrive. fkwits.
