Crafty beggers! To get their lowest tarriff I have to sign up for a smart meter, Quote: We'll contact you to discuss Smart

By choosing this tariff you agree to be contacted for the installation of a smart meter and, where eligible, have one installed for each fuel we supply.

Thinks, I'll be saying goodbye to EON! unless they are all doing it?

You do realise that you pay for any gas or electricity that you use?

So imagine a company that sends you a meter so you don’t have to provide readings anymore as they can access it. Good right!

No, absolutely not. There's privacy at stake here. It is nobody's business when/how someone uses the gas/electricity that a utility company supplies. All that should matter is that it is metered and what is used gets paid for.

They don't need to know details of a private individual's use, they surely have a very good idea of what the demands are at various points on the network and that should be good enough.

Its unlikely eon will be cheaper, even on their cheapest tariff.
Ive just changed from eon to usio, probably a terrible company from a support perspective, but 73/Mon instead of 90/Mon that eon were suggesting on my new tariff with them. (Old dd was about the same before my fixed tariff expired)

Plenty of companies still use "dumb" meters.
Check out the "Bulb" energy thread in Homes and Gardens.

Why not get one but only consent to weekly readings as apposed to daily or half hourly?

Why are you so bothered about them knowing? Smart meters are fine, saves me a job reading the meters and inputting them online.

Update: Since the publication of this article BEAMA, the trade association which represents manufacturers of smart meters, has been in touch to say that none the smart meters tested in the study are part of the UK's official smart meter roll out.

They won't fit a smart meter if it's in an awkward place to get to. Our electricity meter is at the back of a kitchen cupboard and when I was with EON they constantly pestered me to have a smart meter fitted. Once I explained that they'd have to dismantle kitchen cupboards and move appliances to get to it, they said they wouldn't bother. So if you really want to be with EON, but not have a smart meter try that tack.

Wake up people, this is costing millions to fit these to save you money? All meters are legally required to be checked visually every two years so you will still get a knock on the door. Just wait until your encouraged not to use lots of electricity at peak times, because your price per unit has shot up at that time of day. If they know what your using when, you will be charged accordingly, not yet but it’s already to go when they want, big users have been charged this way since year dot. You can of course cook and wash your clothes at night but you may be out driving through London as you don’t pay congestion charge or Dart at Dartford at night either, but I’d rather pay for a total KWh usage not how and when usage.

You can guarantee that at some point in future, non-smart tariffs will be a stupidly high amount to convince everyone to move over....

You can also guarantee that people will be hacking these things inside out to gain cheaper or free electricity. Why anyone would want a potentialy insecure energy meter that enables remote disconnection of power?

I can't believe the adverts for smart meters on the radio. The inference is that everyone is merrily using electricity without being aware it costs them money. "You could power Sheffield if everyone had a smart meter". "You could have free showers for a year if you used a smart meter", and other such drivel. It's bobbins.

How's that different to a standard meter? Also if they're so insecure, surely people will be bypassing the remote disconnection as well wink

Having just been screwed out of £950 by a corrupt / inept / incompetent / dyslexic electricity company and then a further £288 because they then altered / embellished / invented the final meter reading one YEAR later I've just returned to EON on the grounds that it's cheaper in the long run.

The Smart Meter can't be any worse and can be monitored from your phone.

That way I'm not going to have suddenly used 24,000 units a year for my two bedroomed semi with a log burner.

My last comment is unprintable.

Indeed. There has been one running on LBC that said you could save something small like 2-3% on your energy bills and this in turn would save enough energy to power Manchester, Liverpool and Newcastle (if my memory serves me right). As the populations of these large cites have more than 2-3% of the population within them, the ad came across as complete bks.

Where has anyone ever said a smart meter will save you money? Please get your facts right from under your tinfoil hat.

Personally, it's how the world is going. Google apparently listens to you via your phone, Social media knows what you like and don't like. My supermarket knows what I buy because I shop on line, but it also knows because I use my loyalty card when I buy in store. Hell, there might even be a keylogger on your computer.

Oh - back OT, I had a bad experience with EON. Starting out, first house, they kept reducing my monthly DD despite me giving readings every couple of months (data logged). At some point, they did a new calc / fixed an old one and decided that I owed them a grand, and of course they wanted it ASAP. It was a bit of a ball ache at the time but going through the Energy Ombudsman (who are pretty useless) I got a small discount because they admitted to setting up my account incorrectly and paid off a chunk through higher direct debits. Ultimately I was OK because I had a job to pay back the debt and I was prepared to take the company on, but for OAP's or other vulnerable people, a lot of them would have budgeted around the monthly DD and then been financially screwed.

Well just about every ad from smart energy GB goes on about saving energy which people then assume will in turn will reduce fuel bills, as already discussed above if you care to read the thread and get your facts right before replying. I’m not bothered who or what is mointering me as long as it’s not at my expense or the expense of people in fuel poverty in the favour of shareholders of energy companies.

The supermarket loyalty card does not have a direct debit set up so they can take money from my account at will, so please tell us what relevance that has to the thread?
