Hi all,

I'm having a new WB boiler installed next month which comes with the option of a Magna Filter. The warranty without it is 7 years, the warranty with it is 10 years.

The filter is being charged at £300+VAT for the part and fitting as part of the job. I live in an area with hard water.

Understand that the part itself would be quite cheap on its own, but I think it needs to all be done by the approved fitter for the warranty to be valid.

Is it worth the £360 for an additional 3 years warranty, or should the system be ok with the usual inhibitors?

Thanks,
Nick

A magnetic filter is definitely worth having. The part cost is about £80 including VAT. If he's installing a new boiler at the same time it's a ten minute job.

Tell him you want to give him the business but he's way off with his price.

A magnetic filter is for collecting sludge heating side. Might be worth installing one of these on the boiler's cold inlet if you have hard water.

Whats the age of the system/radiators?

I would fit one, but agree the price appears very high. The question then becomes is £200 a fair price to extend the warranty.

How long are you going to be in the house?

Ah wow - thanks guys. I'd be reading some reviews which suggested that they didn't do very much. House was built in 1991, and we moved in this year. We won't be here for ever, but probably will be for more than 7 years...

I'll see if there is any wiggle room on price for the filter - as it would effectively be paying £200ish for an extra 3 years of warranty.

The Worcester ones are a bit more expensive, but £300 + VAT seems to be taking the piss a bit.

Ask for a cheaper filter, such as a Magnaclean. I'm pretty certain it won't void the warranty if it's a different brand.

Sounds like a chancer using the warranty stuff as a sales tactic to get people to pay over the odds for the filter!

ETA - just reread the OP - if he's quoting £300 + VAT for a Magnaclean filter, that is a proper piss take. I would actually be cheaper to just get him to fit the boiler and then get someone else out to come and fit one!

What does the rest of the quote look like?

Rest of the quote seems fine to me - just under £3k for a a WB 34CDI and relocating the location from one side of the room to the other side. First quote I got was £1.5k more!

You need a wb one for the warranty. The adey or fernox ones are much cheeper. The fernox tf1 in our old house leaked.

This is nothing to do with hard or soft water. It is part of the sealed heating circuit and removes bits of metal that come off the rads.

You'll need a decent salt based water softner and not that silly magnetic thing linked above for soft water.

Re the magnet £360 is way too much! Especially if its the 22mm one!

My plumber got the 28mm fitted to our system for £197 inc vat from the local merchants.

If you're having the system power flushed as part of the install then whether you'll need one of these filters is debatable. My installer recommended one but it wasn't a warranty stipulation of the manufacturer, Viessman in my case, only that a flush was carried out beforehand.

I didn't bother. The old system I inherited had a magnaclean on it, fitted by those rogues at British gas. It collected barely anything and these filters themselves can leak. May be of use on sludged up old systems but if your system is power flushed and radiators aren't old then to me it's all a bit pointless. Some would say money spinner.
