Got a couple of the sonoff s26 plugs to control my outside lighting, work really well

I’m contemplating getting some for indoors, fish tank lights desk lamps etc

Read comments on forums about ptz these burning houses down etc

Is this just poppy cock as most electrical stuff comes from China and is fine

Here is a label - same as the uk plug

Thankyou

I have loads of S20 WiFi plugs controlled via EWeLink and have been using them for at least 2yrs without any issue for lights and scenes both indoors and outdoors

The issue with a lot of Chinese stuff that connects to the mains, is that the capacitors used are rarely of the correct ratings for constant connection to mains voltages.

Capacitors intended for mains connection are "X" or "Y" rated and are also 'self healing' so they are designed to be safe under conditions like mains voltage surges etc.

Underrated capacitors will tend to rupture in extended use, often resulting in a minor fire, the severity of which will depend on how fire retardant the associated printed circuit boards and / or other peripherals connected nearby are.

EDIT: I just found this teardown of the S26 model, and it actually looks ok.

The hardware in these is all pretty similar, an esp8266 and a relay. There seems to be a good choice of alternate firmwares for these devices, in case you don't want the MSS to know your WiFi password and when you turn the fish tank lights on and off!
