I am not one for getting involved in other people’s business but for some reason our neighbours have annoyed me.

To cut a long story short they purchased the house about a year ago, they seem nice people and he works for the local council. A couple of weeks ago the council arrived and cut down the trees and bushes on a small bit of council land (about 400sqft) between their house and a public footpath that borders his property, this is a little odd as the land has never really been maintained before.

The following couple of days the council workman completed the removal of the trees and then moved onto cutting back trees and bushes within his land and other general garden maintenance. I thought this was a bit cheeky using council staff for private work but yesterday afternoon I noticed that some marker pegs have been placed on the now cleared council land so I can only assume he is going to try and move his boundary.

Should this bother me or should I mind my own business?

He may have purchased it from the council.
My sister did similar with her house and an adjacent strip of land purchased from the council.

I did think that but as he has had council workers doing private work on his garden I assume it would be at some ridiculous low price.

So it might be a perk of the job, have you ever benefited from working for your employer?

Why not phone the council and ask what's going on?, could be something underhand, could be legit, they should be able to
confirm.

Councils do accept and charge for private work so you never know he may have paid for it.

Or come to some arrangement with the head of Parks and Gardens for some work done to his place whist they're there for something that benefits the dept/council. As always it's not what you know but who but it's what makes the world go round.
It doesn't have to be underhand.

Everything from garden landscaping to roof repairs according to the leaflet that accompanied my council tax demand this morning.

Why don't you ask your neighbour? There's nothing wrong with being nosey about land adjacent to your home, I'd not draw any conclusions but investigate, I'm sure everything will be legal & above board.

It does seem slightly odd, The Council might have sold him the land, but their workmen doing the works seems odd and if he works for the Council its more odd. Most Councils would want to be seen to be squeaky clean in this sort of case.

If the land has been sold to him it will appear as such on the Land Registry so do a search, you coud then ask the COuncil about its workers doing the works. Or was it their contractors doing the works?

Nothing wrong with asking in my opinion. Yes one might get perks from this when working for a private company but not a council

^^This^^

When I worked for the "Council", there were odd perks but getting work done like this wouldn't be one of them and getting the "Council" to do work (or rather their Direct Labour) was extremely costly as there were MASSIVE oncosts involved to cover office staff, plant, materials, etc.

Remember the "Council" are a public funded affair (I won't say business) and as such need to be seen to be "squeeky clean" or someone will criticise

My FIL was a part of the management that was involved in the design and build of Concorde, and on quiet days, he used them at his house to paint and do the garden.

One of the company secretaries where I used to work, diverted staff and materials from building a nuclear fuel reprocessing plant to getting a swimming pool built at home.

Didn't end well for him - Harold Bolter.

We had our road resurfaced many years ago. Many hedges etc overhung the tarmac. Council offered to cut back the hedges / shrubs for us as £100 per property or we could do it ourselves before a certain date prior tot he roadworks. I had a 10m hedge to cut back. 1 hr, two trips to the skip. Quicker and cheaper for me to do it. The owner of the property with the 300m frontage, quite sensibly took the council up on their offer. I suspect to council may have changed their pricing model since...........

Does it bother you to the extent that you want to cost them their jobs, have the house next door repossessed, bought cheaply at auction by a dodgy BTL landlord who will turn it into a HMO and rent it to a succession of cannabis farmers and shed vodka distillers?
