www.nextdoor.co.uk Is it a con?

Apparently it's a free private online network for neighbourhoods to chat about neighbourly issues.
I live in the city centre of Manchester and got an A4 sheet of paper put through my letter box with all the details from. Quite cunningly, they've kept the print very simple to make it look like a local "neighbourhood watch" type has typed it up themselves and it's signed off with a first name and street where they're apparently from.
What raised my suspicions was when I went to my parents who live about 5 miles away, they had the exact same A4 printout with their locality printed on it and a different contact name and street.
When you go on the website, it seems quite slick.
So, what's the point of the website? It doesn't seem dodgy, I just fail to see the commercial point of it.

Looks like a big player https://nextdoor.co.uk/about_us/ has backers and is in quite a few countries.
I can’t be arsed myself though. There’s so many groups now like local forums, Facebook groups, mumsnet type crap etc, who wants another one?

As mentioned - they're an actual organisation.
There used to be a pretty useful local group app/website called Streetlife.
Nextdoor bought them out around 2 years ago, and isn't anywhere near as useful.

There are some good ones on that!

Also you can report suspicious looking people and council problems so it does bring the neighbourhood together in some way. It's different from Facebook as only your name and approximate location is revealed - people open up a bit more.

Doesn't do a better job than a local facebook group.
I think the question is less about the quality of the product and more about who you trust with your data. Facebook happily sell every conceivable piece of information they know about you to all and sundry. They are waaaaaaaaaaaay past the point of doing so as a reasonable exchange for a free service now, as far as I'm concerned. Not sure about Nextdoor. I imagine it's the same business model but on a much smaller scale.
It's good for trade recommendations and alerts for scummy scumbags in the immediate area. I believe there are local coordinators who can select people to receive the invitations, who can then invite their neighbors. As with anything with people, you just have to ignore the idiots and focus on the stuff of interest / relevance to you.
Signed up for ours recently, got myself a £212 rebate and reduced ongoing charges from our local water authority that I hadn't heard about.
Good for free advertising if you have stuff you want to get rid of but too good to dump etc.
Also some very useful stuff from the neighbourhood watch scheme, info on roadworks and other happenings, and very good for finding local recommended tradesmen, and it costs nothing so whats not to like.

I signed up and glance at it once a week. Current posts include:
lost cats.
suspicious vans driving around.
2 local councillors constantly getting at each other.
Uproar about stolen wheelie bins.
Workman placing temporary speed limit signs in inappropriate places.
If nothing else its an insight to the types of mentals you have living around you.
