How do you search for a house by size (Square foot), or by plot size?
I don't want to work anymore. I have reached my fill of stress and it's now becoming detrimental to my health. Kids are still young enough that a move anywhere in the country won't be the end of the world. But if I'm going to do it I want it to be a big mother off house that I can make a few quid with.
Don't care about the state its in (within reason)
Want a big house (10 bed?)
With big grounds
That I can have a big garage with
Where I could make a few extra quid by...
Doing wedding receptions
Bed and breakfast
Host shooting / PH events
I can spend anything up to around 1m. But, realistically if I want to retire and have enough cash to last me the next 50 years it needs to be around 400k.
Also, be helpful if it wasn't miles and miles from anything. The wife would like friends, I am ambivalent.
Is this achievable, or do I need to stick to the 9-5?

I think what you want is certainly possible.
I was looking at this place: https://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/prop... which is already almost divided into guest houses for you.
But .. I'd look for somewhere in an area popular with tourists the whole year round. 2 or 3 cottages in the Cotswolds (say Burford) would probably provide a good year-round return. One to live in, 2 to rent out.

Rettie seem to have alot of these types of properties in Scotland. Just search by map view and look at the ones out of town.

Plus running a B&B isn't going to be easy. If it's not close to a restaurant you will need to add in Dinner

As you could afford 1m+ would you not be better investing and retiring somewhere abroad, when you money would go a lot further?

I could move abroad but have kids and a wife to think about. Along with ageing grandparents, aunts and uncles etc...
I could also just retire and stay in the house we are in now, bit small for 5 of us though.
The layout of this one looks pretty good for a live in b&b. Also close enough to Edinburgh to make a killing over the festival if you put a shuttle on. Lovely little island in the lake that might attract smaller weddings?

Some friends converted their family house below to a B&B, lovely but time consuming. Think of it as a lifestyle rather than retirement.
