Items left in my garden

Bit of a strange one, We are currently doing a house refurb. Last weekend we turned up to the house to see 2 bags at the side.
One was a rucksack (quite a distinctive design) with Tea, Coffee, Milk, Cereal etc
The other was a large holdall with various tools. Battery drill/driver, sander, nail gun, and the associated screws, nails plus a DVD player.
On top of the bags was a hi-vis coat with another battery drill/driver, spanner, wipes, phone charger lead and a packet of bacon!
We handed the stuff into the local police station.
To me it looks like someone who has left a building site and maybe gone out on the beer and seen somewhere quiet to put their stuff to come back for. But the DVD player makes me think otherwise. Have they been out robbing, were they planning on breaking in to ours if can see it's empty?
We moved bins over to the spot, but over the previous 2 nights, someone has been back into the garden as the gate has been opened at the rear.
What do people think?

It was all neatly piled. Where the front of the house turns to go down the side, It was down the side of the house but half sticking out of the corner? If that makes sense.
Half the bag was being house wall, other half stuck out, as if left it like that for someone else to pick up and so they could see it.

I would say that it was the proceeds of a break in of a trade persons van that had been stashed for later collection in a vehicle. No way any thief with an ounce of sense is going to be lugging stolen gear around the place. Maybe they got apprehended after stashing the items and couldn't return to collect.
Edit to add that they wouldn't have stuck around the van for long to check what was in the ruck sacks hence the bag of tea, coffee etc..

You've got an empty house undergoing a refurb. Is it possible they are tools and breakfast (can't explain the DVD player) of a builder who has mistaken your house for the one he should be working on? Maybe he dumped his stuff, and then nipped off somewhere for something else, came back to find stuff gone and house empty because you were at the police station.
